Okay...now you guys got me curious. Did you grow up calling these menorah? I learned Hebrew in Israel when I was working there for several years, but only ever heard them called chanukiah. Just wondering if that's an American thing because people are familiar with the regular menorah candle holders for 7 candles and maybe they are used interchangeably? Which is kinda a weird question, since I'm American...in London...but not Jewish...but a Hebrew-speaker.

I am not Jewish, but that's the term I always heard... I could certainly ask someone.

I think it's that menorah is a general term, meaning lamp- but then there are the specific ones used for Chanukah, which are the chanukiah. Most people in my area call it a menorah (my kids even used that word in Hebrew School), which seems to be correct but not precise. It all probably comes down to what you grew up saying.

I always go with menorah solely because it's easier to say than chanukiah. But yes, chanukiah is technically more correct than menorah.

Mine was Hardywood Gingerbread Stout. YUM.

Who knew this place was so chock-full-o-Jews? Didn't know we could even scrape a minion together. If anyone can find my [chanukiah], let me know. Couldn't find it last year, and we are too apathetic to buy another one. My kids are old enough to be confused why don't do Hanukkah, yet my Jewish in-laws do a big Christmas. All four grandparents are Jewish, and the first year my parents came down to my in-laws Christmas soiree, my Mom was worried my in-laws would be offended if she called her gifts to my kids Hanukkah gifts. Maybe I'll celebrate with He'Brew RIPA on Rye.

Interesting stuff with the chanukiah conversation. I heard that at some point, but forgot about it. Always heard it called a menorah.

Tell ya what, if you aren't in a hurry and want a framinghammer glass + a few of their sours or fresh beers I can throw em in a box and send your way after my next trip there (i live in Framingham so wont be too long). Glass was only $5 I think.

    On to night 2:
The Maracuya is mine & the Spencer was for the wifey. We also got the kids present, a driedel, menorah (or hannukiah ;-)), and even something fried in oil all in one pic!

When I was in Israel, the way it was explained was that Menorah is a general term for a branched lamp, usually having 6 branches, and that Chanukiah is specifically the one we light this week, having 8 branches besides the center Shamash.

In any case, last night after the crowd left I ended up opening a Dark Horse Plead the Fifth that I've had sitting around in my cellar for a couple years. It was amazing.
I have a Victory Wild Devil that has been around for at least as long sitting in the fridge right now waiting for dinner.

Hey Friends Happy Chanukah. (Not Jewish - not sure what faith I am though)
Love the food pics. Worked in a Jewish deli when I was younger. Learned how to make sweet noodle koogle, chopped liver, matzo ball soup and latkes- all of which I learned to love. Hard to get that liver smell out of your clothes though.
Hope you all are enjoying family, food and friends. And of course beer.
    Happy Holiday!

The Menorah was the 6-branched candelabra that stood in the holy temple in Jerusalem before it was destroyed. During the story of Chanukah, the Assyrian Greeks, who occupied Jerusalem at the time, had ransacked the temple, leaving just enough pure olive oil to light the Menorah for a single day. After the Greeks were fought off and the temple reclaimed, the oil lasted for 8 days instead of 1, while a new batch of oil could be made. Therefore, even though the temple Menorah had just 6 branches, the chanukiah we light today has 8 branches to commemorate the miracle. We just call it a Menorah because it's easier and most people know what it is.

lol the "ch" sound is the hebrew pronunciation, it's difficult to say if you didn't grow up hearing it.

the chanukia is indeed the common hebrew pronunciation, they both refer to the same thing, although in israel the Shamis (larger candle) will sometimes be on the far left of the menorah instead of the middle.

My wife is Jewish so I get honorary membership in the tribe. We did latkes last night and lit the menorah. My wife's great grandmother was from Austria so I had a SN Vienna Lager in her honor.

Tonight... No latkes but we lit the menorah. I had a backwoods bastard - no symbolism, just wanted one!

I'm glad someone else asked this because I wasn't sure either. I've seen the Ch spelling but I wasn't sure if it was the same thing. Now we both learned something. Happy Chanukah, Hanukkah, either one or both anyone celebrating it!
