Based on two truly stupid pieces of advice that people have mentioned in the last 24 hours, I thought it might be interesting to collect some LHBS "wisdom".

The two pieces of wisdom that inspired this are

    1) Use candy like sour patch in each bottle to make up for a miscalculated priming sugar addition.

    2) Hydrometer needs to float for an hour to get an accurate reading.

anyone care to add to this list?

    4) We don't carry them and you don't need an o-ring for your bucket lid...they just get dirty
    5) What's dehusked Carafa?

both of these happened a few years ago when they were the only game in town

I confess to thinking of these as essentially the same thing from different maltsters. I guess carafoam may have a sweet nuance that carapils lacks, but this does not seem to be an egregiously misinformed suggestion.

I notice a very sweet difference when using carafoam. Not what I want when making pales,IPAs and other styles.

Wow, I knew there was a truck load of bad advice out there, but .... Wow, just wow.

I especially like the one from @CADETS3 I wonder chemical transformation is behind the magic of starsan into sugar

My father-in-law actually believed it too. Then I told him that starsan is acid!!!! Explain that to me. The message was, "don't fear the foam, as the starsan turns into fermentable sugars for the yeast." LOL

When Starsan is diluted by wort it becomes a yeast nutrient, not a fermentable.

I've heard that before, from the guy who owns 5 Star I think. But I wonder what elements/compounds in Starsan are actually used by yeast, and whether those elements/compounds are ever actually limiting factors anyway. (Couldn't be marketing hype, right?)
