I know it sucks to not get a free glass with your purchase, but you can buy the glass on their store. It is in stock right now for full price purchase.

I would be writing an email/letter to my state representative explaining your displeasure with that law. I doubt they have tons of people writing them telling them to keep it. It only takes one person to get a change started.

While I know Utopia was released several weeks (maybe a month ago), I've been to several stores in my local area still with a bottle or two on the shelf. At over $200 it's definitely a significant emotional (and financial) decision to purchase one. So at this point, does anyone see it as a good buy? Or would I be better off saving my pennies for a trip to Michigan for a KBS release party?

I feel the same way. My friend who has drank a bottle before says that it's one of those must haves that you need to drink at some point. But I am on the fence. $200 is a lot to spend on a bottle.

Get friends together and buy it together. 5 people at $40 each for the size of the bottle is still "reasonable" and a large enough size to warrant the purchase.

Had. It's a novelty. Buy yourself 20 $10 bombers instead.

It's really a great beer....expensive as all get out, but great.

Utopias is tougher to get than KBS (although KBS isn't all that easy either in this part of the country). If you've never had it before, I'd go for it since it's available. If money is an issue (which is for many of us here including myself), do the KBS haul next year. Utopias is incredibly complex and more of a liquor so after you open it, it can be capped and saved for a good long time to enjoy when you feel inclined, you can't do that with KBS.

If the price tag is a big issue, I would say you should skip it. I bought a bottle this year, but $200 isn't really a big deal since I don't have kids or any of the typical budget things a lot of guys have. I am lucky in that regard, but it still took a bit of justification (i.e. lying to myself) to convince myself it was a good idea.

Obviously I don't know your financial situation but it's possible you could do both, depending on how important it is to you and what else you might be willing cut back on. Priorities. Or, split a bottle with friends as previously suggested. Or, try a sample at a festival, if available. It was available to sample at Mondial de la Biere in Montreal a few years back.

$200 is a lot of money for a bottle of beer. I could buy a couple bottles of good scotch for that. That being said, I wouldn't mind trying it. Like a few others have said, try to get a few friends to go in with you and have a little tasting get together. I suppose you could try selling the empty bottle on ebay and get your money back.

My $0.03: Don't do it. Utopias is amazing. I have very high expectations for hyped beers, but this one met them. Nevertheless, I see the price tag and think, "no chance." Way more interesting things to spend my money on, beer or otherwise. Plus, if you keep running in craft circles, you'll probably get a chance to try it anyways (I got it at a beerfest for no additional charge). And a taste really is all you need. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but couldn't see myself having more than just a taste. Not a beer you're going to sit and drink a pint of and also far too sweet for me to drink as if it were a whisky.

For me its a purchase for tradition. I share a few ounces with close friends on new years eve every year, and it's fun doing a little vertical once you have more than one vintage. They only get cracked then so they last a long time, and have great memories associated along the way.

I recommend against it. I bought a bottle of Utopia, and it was interesting, but not in even in my top 25 of favorite beers. You could buy so many other beers or buy beers to trade for hard-to-get beers that aren't in your area with the money you would spend on Utopia.

Check around and see if any bars in your area got some . I was able to get a shot glass sized pour for $20 at least you will know if you like it or not before dropping $200

To be honest I would seriously consider buying the Utopia. I really can't think of one good reason to ever want to step foot in the State of _ichigan and I live close enough to smell it on a windy day much less ever saving my hard earned money to be able to afford to do it. I do make on acception every other year to witness OSU's annual thumping of TTUN in Ann Arbor. All gas and food is purchased in the great State of Ohio before entering _ichigan no hard earned money is wasted there. And if you didn't get a ticket to purchase KBS at the release party through Brown Paper Tickets then the release party would be a serious waste of good $. Trade $4$ on the KBS and buy the Utopia. I have almost a case of KBS Utopia's are a much tougher get!

I think the above sentence says everything you need to know about someone who went to OSU instead of Michigan. You're welcome, Michigan fans.

As for the OP's question, if you have the disposable income and enjoy liquor such as scotch, bourbon, etc. then it's worth the purchase. As others have mentioned, it is also an event every time a bottle is opened. You'll make friends, family and strangers happy every time you are willing to share.

My glass was sitting on my back porch when I got home from work yesterday. After e-mailing customer service about my "invalid" code, they sent it out without the handling and shipping fees.

Hah! Color me scatterbrained! I bought my bottle in VA, not MD, and VA doesn't allow glass shipping. That's what happens when you blindly follow the Google Maps navigation to the nearest Total Wine. Guess I shoulda stayed on my side of the border.

I graduate from grad school this week so I told myself "well I need to get a graduation present". After I bought it I remembered I don't have an income
