Last year I went to a bar in Maine. I sat down and asked what beer they had on tap, and the bartender named all the big beers, from Guinness to Bud Light. She then asked what kind of beer do you like, and I said, "I'm more of a "craft beer" type person". She then named a list of great local beers that I never heard of. I got a great local DIPA, an Allagash White, and local Baxter Stowaway IPA. If I hadn't made it clear what type of beer I like, she would've poured me a pint of swill.

Yup, the term "craft beer" makes it easier to communicate with others like your post clearly illustrates.

    Cheers!

That is a great example of how useful themail word is. I do not understand why people cannot grasp that.

I have never used 'craft'. I either specify.....and when generalizing I use 'micros'. It helps other people realize I am not being condescending or arrogant. Drink what you like....as has been said...'good' is very subjective..

Lol, because using the term craft makes you condescending and arrogant?

To some it does. To me? No. Go into a bar in rural deep south and ask about their selection of craft beers....and it may be easier to understand my point.

If I ever go into a bar in the rural deep South I will be careful not to use the word craft. Probably a lot of other words I often use that I would avoid in that context. That does not mean I cannot use them in other contexts.

And of course you can use any term you like, wherever you are. My original statement referred to what term I use...and why I use it...and an example as to WHY. I do not recall posting anything about what term YOU or OTHERS may use. Call it Pheromone of Athena if you want......

It's probably best to know the bar you're going to and what beers they serve. I knew the bar I went to in Maine had craft beer, but for some reason the bartender wasn't very forthright about it. She probably figured I wanted a cheaper beer instead of a slightly more expensive high quality local beer. I actually got it free too and paid an extra $6 tip because some guy at the bar enjoyed our conversation so much he put down extra money on his card for my drinks as he was leaving.

Lets equate this logic to other things.

Fast-Food & Fine-Dinning, they are both just food, so why label them differently? Lets say I'm in a hurry in a town i don't know, and I am filling up with gas. I ask the attendant, "hey where is the nearest food"?, of course not I ask for fast-food because it distinguishes what I am looking for.

Craft beer is just that, It says this beer is more than just a beer used for a bong or to shotgun, it was skillfully made and cared for. Its intent is not to to be made so that the majority of people can drink it, that you can dirk it quickly and in vast quantities, or made in large batches to reduce cost. Its intent was that someone somewhere wanted to make a beer they thought would tasty. To take that away is asinine and thought up by a complete hipster and/or nihilist who is trying to sound cool.

I hate to spoil your day but macro beer is at least, amd probably more, skilfully made than "craft" ....you might not appreciate the result but that's a matter of personal taste.
Some of my favourite beers are quite delicately flavoured, rather than trying to blow you away they seduce you with exquisite nuances. Beers I can drink all night without getting tired of them or getting palate fatigue. These are supremely well crafted, their brewers have no way of hiding faults or mistakes.

That was in reference to the nihilist comment. "Its" = beer.
