Not a bad documentary, but Jesus....... Backshore Brewing Company owner Danny Robinson was depressing to say the least. It literally brought the doc down a bit. Not sure if the premise was to base the documentary on the struggles of small breweries or celebrate the industry as a whole.

Danny Robinson was the primary focus of the documentary and he didn't crack a smile until the very end, while taking a photo next to a set of drums. That's it! Nothing but complaints about money, lawyers fees, being burnt out on the service side, etc. The thing is, why in the hell didn't Backshore Brewing incorporate and at the minimum, conduct a patent search for their name. This would have saved Danny Robinson a ton of stress. Then again, maybe not. He just seems miserable!

Anyhow, the story-line surrounding The Brew Gentlemen Beer Company was really good, as were all the statistics shown throughout the documentary. Beer Culture and Beer Wars are still the best craft beer docs out right now.

Sorry it wasn't your favorite but thanks for bringing it to my attention; I'm always on the lookout for new beer docs!

I agree though that Beer Culture is excellent as is their follow-up, Crafting a Nation.

Definitely liked both beer culture and crafting a nation. American beer is one of my favorites, not as much of a documentary but I'd check it out.

It's not so easy to come across well on camera sometimes. I think that most people do not smile on camera and when they focus on what they are trying to say then they smile even less. You really can't infer anything by this. He's not an actor or public speaker.

Also, you don't know how many minutes/hours of more positive footage was left in the editing bay. He might remember the day as saying mostly upbeat stuff with a few minutes of serious talk mixed in, and that's only what the producer chose to include.

I'm starting to notice a trend in this style of film making. I bought Crafting a Nation and some of it was good but most of it was just weeping and complaining. I get that starting up and running a brewery is hard but I prefer the documentary styling of Beer Hunter. While difficulties are conveyed to the viewer in Beer Hunter it comes across as informative and less angsty.

I think it conveys a realism that a lot of fluff pieces tend to ignore. The fact of the matter is that it IS expensive and hard work and success is not anywhere close to guaranteed. I feel like a lot of people see the number of breweries opening and think, "hey if they can do it, so can I, it will be easy" and that just isn't the case.

Great responses! The editing comment makes a ton of sense. As with most news, negativity seems to sell and draw audiences in.

I'm still curious if most breweries trademark their names and incorporate now-a-days? Common business sense would say yes. As far as trademarking the names of the various brews a brewery puts out, this would seem kinda silly and expensive. I wonder how some of the recent lawsuits are handled by the courts/judges with this particular issue (ie: deciding factors on the outcomes).

This reminds me of a headline I saw on the news recently - 'Worst Day for Stocks in Months', I thought to myself, why didn't they word it 'Best Day to Buy Stocks in Months'.

    Everybody has an agenda.

You may want to give Ken Grossman's book, "Beyond the Pale," a read. It captures the blood, sweat and tears (ie. hard work, scary moments, ingenuity, legal troubles, etc.) in a way that provides a cautionary tale and good dose of reality, but also is incredibly upbeat, positive and impressive.
