It's my fault because I do know better. I'm not exactly sure how orders and distributions go, that's why I didn't call out the battle shop by name. You're right though, if there is no bottle date then how could they know? I just assumed they knew when they received it and how long they'd had it. I never considered the possibility that a distributor would sell 1 yr old beer to a shop passing it off as up to date. Guess I didn't think that through completely. I just figured they were pushing an old product because it was a shelf turd. They could still be to blame if this was the case.

Every Evil Twin bottle ive had was Julian Date Coded in yellow mid neck of the bottle. Now i haven had that many... and those codes are easy to smudge off with excessive handling.

I've never seen the date on Knee Deep, I did have a few bottles of Breaking Bud because I knew it was a new release but I will now check the bottles for dates. Breaking Bud is very good. Thanks.

Unless a brewer ships close-dated beer to a wholesaler, old beer happens because of over-buying by the wholesaler, retailer, or bar. Either way, someone needs to stand up and watch dates and discount before the beer turns to sludge. I always liked Belgians and big dark beers because through time they might change, and often the older version would be better. The most reputable retailers that I know have a "culling" system that stays ahead of the beer's total demise.

I think it is great a college student is educated in his beer drinking enough to consider the bottle in question and has all the finer points of said bottle, that is 3xactly my point, boy how times have changed, if I had a couple extra dollars I was showboating a Dinkel Acker Dark. The millenials are embracing great beer and know their stuff, carry on!

I am going to plagiarize your post except substitute VA for DE. I have found that most of the six packs are generally not too old but really beware of the dates on the singles! Like you stated, I might have a list of 7 or 8 beers I want to try as singles before committing to a six pack, but end up with only two that are reasonably dated or not dated at all.

Even $8 a beer is way over my college budget. In those days, we drank the 3 Bs - Buckhorn, Brown Derby & Bergiemeister. You could get a 6 pack for about $4. But you had to drink it ICE cold to tolerate it. Of course, in college, alcohol was alcohol!

Never use to do that, but it makes all the difference with IPA's. Now its like second nature.

Perhaps. Yet, I have only had one IPA from them, Molotov Cocktail (although its more of a triple IPA at 13% ABV), and it is one of the best IPAs I have ever had; I just had one at roughly 5 - 6 months old, and it was still great (although not as fresh as it could be).

I live in the Bay Area, and Evil Twin 4 packs are around $14. The OP was talking about a $12 bomber, which is not cheap at all for an IPA.

I did not do a cost comparison. I was speaking more about the fact that the OP spent a pretty penny on a fairly expensive brand, taking a chance and he got burned. In this area most retailers break the Evil Twin bottles into singles, most likely gaining a few points along the way. I've been burned buying some of these beers and will stick with the big heartier flavors.
