What's up guys? New guy here. Stopped out at the local bottle shop and came out with Southern Tier's Imperial Mokah, and Pumking. Both room temp. Problem is, I ran into a few issues that required my 2 bottles to stay in the back of my Jeep for a few hours. More like 5. And for Ohio's standards, we've had quite a little heat wave recently.

...Long story short, my bottles were cooking under my Jeep Hardtop :slight_frown:. As in warm to the touch, almost hot, until they reached home where they are being stored at room temp. My question is, how long is too long dealing with craft beer and warm tempature? Obviously, i'm going to answer my own question whether or not I ruined them lol. But is there a general rule of thumb as far as transport goes? More than a general "get them out ASAP". I dont know how you guys do it in the warmer climates, but I was looking forward to having them this week. Thanks guys!

Something I learned from living in Texas: Carry a cooler for just this occasion. And if I'm going to be out for a while, some frozen bottles of water or chunks of ice.

Meh, I think you're fine after 5 hours. I've done worse.

I once left a bottle of Real Ale Pale Rye in my car for a month in the summer after accidentally leaving it under a seat and it was fine after chilling. It's more the light than the heat. Light will cause skunkyness.

I keep a small cooler in my SUV. Even if I don't have ice packs, how much is a cup of ice at a gas station compared to how much I'm paying for craft beer? Worse comes to worse I keep the cooler out of the sun as much as possible. Same can go for a bag or so. Heat isn't as bad as light, but you don't want to leave it out too long.

Im with the cooler thing, keep a couple of small styrofoam coolers in the car just to throw beers in if I need to, Ive been using them quite a bit in this heat. And yeah a cup of ice is usually no more than 50 cents if they even charge you at all.
As for your beers, they're probably fine. Ive had beers that spent a long time out in the heat in my garage that were surprisingly not bad.

I accidentally left a bottle of Pt5 in my car from the afternoon until the next morning last year in July or August and it tasted fine.

Knowing the fluctuation in temperature your beer sees from bottling to your store shelf you have little to worry about. Is it a good idea to keep your beer in a hot car? No. Is it going to turn your beer into a disgusting mess? No.

You should be fine, but I'm going to echo what some other people said. I keep an empty 750ml bottle box with dividers in the back of the car for picking up bottles when temperature isn't an issue and a small cooler in the back for when temperature is an issue.

I think the bigger issue is keeping them out of direct sunlight, so as long as they were in a bag/box or covered, they'd be a lot better off than just sitting out in the open on a seat..

Standard new guy question. Best answers are from vrbulldog22 and Hanzo. Beer's tough. As long as it doesn't freeze or boil, it'll be OK. If your car was hot, think how hot the beer truck and distributor's warehouse got. And for that matter, the loading docks it sat on.

BTW, I was disappointed in the difference between the thread title and actual topic. I thought it was going to be about sex...

Thanks guys. I actually work in food distribution so I know all about the trailer temps. Never crossed my mind at the time, but these babies were cooking when I got back to the jeep! I didn't foresee my bottles being left like that, but I'll keep a container handy in case it happens again.

Having a lot fun getting into craft beer for the past year. Look forward to hanging around the forums. Thanks again for the tips.

P.S. 5thOhio- Sorry to get your hops twisted. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a case of Natural Light on my back porch, that has been exposed to the elements relentlessly for 2 years (yes, 2 years). We are waiting for a good occasion to drink them. I hope they impress.

If this doesn't skunk a beer what the hell does?

Direct sunlight skunks. Heat doesn't really do anything until you start getting into extremes.

Curious, what were you going to do if we said it was probably undrinkable?

I live in SoCal (so 90 to 100+ degree Summer days) and buy beer on my lunch breaks. Since I don't feel too comfortable bringing it up to my desk, I will just leave it in the car wherever there is shade. Park under a tree, put up a sun visor, put the beer under the seat, etc. You should be fine.

beer shopping at lunch time is the best! i usually try to keep an old styrofoam shipper from work in the trunk with a few ice packs & that usually does the trick keeping the beer safe, cheers!
