I'm onto Scythe when I can get it, great beer. I can't believe in my wildest dream that NoDa would let HDR get away. Not only get away but it's stayed away for quite a long time now, can't believe that can't get back what they once brewed. When it's right it's as right as an IPA gets. They have to know they screwed it up, I can't believe they can't fix it.

I think hop drop is awesome! My favorite NC IPA.

Got gifted some NODA stuff, including Hop Drop N Roll, as well as some stuff from Ashville. When i was in Charlotte Hop Drop N Roll was a solid IPA. Not the best I've ever had or anything, but a really enjoyable IPA. My sister who lives down there had Jam Session at her wedding too which was excellent. Mostly because good local craft beer at weddings isn't something I've had the fortune of enjoying. Great beer scene down there and it all seems so easily accessible

I know it's not technically NC local (although it's brewed here) but for the bang to buck ratio, you cannot go wrong with Oskar Blues IPA. It's $8-9 a sixer, is usually really fresh and tastes delicious!

Maybe it's just me but the one time I tried it about a month ago I thought the OB's IPA tasted like roofing tar would if that were to come in a consumable liquid form.

In terms of HD&R, I also believe that has really fallen off from where it once was. In fact we were in Waterbury, VT on Wednesday for a Heady drop and met a couple of guys in the parking lot as we were loading up our allotment in the cooler and I gave them a 4-pack of HD&R we took up here from NC and said... "Merry Christmas. I need the cooler space and I'll bet you won't see much of this up here. I wish it was as good as it was as good as it was quite some time ago but you guys form your own opinion." And off we went...

Had Hop Drop on tap at the North Tryon location today (12/27) with full intentions of buying a four pack or two to go. Have to say we were really disappointed. Just a malty mess. Tasted old and had zero citrus/bursting fruit hop presence I remember. We visited four Charlotte breweries today and Noda was definitely the worst in terms of quality. New tap room is really cool but Hop Drop is not at all the beer it once was. Too many choices in the city and state to give this another try.

The worst part is that it still sells like crazy, so they have no real motivation to fix it. There is no doubt in my mind that they know there is a problem with it, but until it starts hurting their bottom line, they aren't going to make any major changes to their process. The fact that they can knowingly serve terrible beer in their own taproom is a huge slap in the face to the customers that have supported them from the beginning.

If you're listening NoDa, I personally will not be taking any more chances with your stuff. I've had my last bad HDnR. You've lost a pretty loyal customer. I understand that fermentation can be unpredictable, but it's gotten ridiculous. For over a year I've let bad beer after bad beer slide, but I'm done. I encourage others to speak with their dollars as well.

to add another anecdote that can be used to make sweeping generalizations about the beer and brewery as a whole, I had my first can last night. Huge citrus and cilantro notes. Every can must be equally fantastic, forever and ever, and everything the brewery makes must be golden.

I was at the old NoDa, across from Bird Song probably 3 years ago when visiting my sister and was very impressed by their Hop Drop n Roll. They also had Jam Session last year at their wedding which was fantastic (I'd had it before, but to have any good beer at a wedding is a plus).

Was the change from switching breweries? Or did it go downhill well after switching buildings? My sister brought some stuff up this weekend. I was looking forward to trying to the Hoppy Holidays but wasn't too impressed. It wasn't completely cold though so I have one more to try. The Hop Drop n Roll tasted good to me. I don't remember what it was like 3 years ago, but it was the best of what I had. That was towards the end of the night though after drinking some other IPAs from other breweries they brought up, which sadly I think they just picked off shelves in a grocery store or something and almost all of them tasted old/funky.

I thought Hoppy Holidays tasted great and very similar to what I thought HDR used to be.

Yea, again, I think when I had it, it wasn't cold enough yet. Either that or it suffered from a car ride in unusual 70 degree weather after I'm sure it was previously refrigerated. Have another in the fridge that is nice and cold so will definitely be revisiting it

Has anyone had the 12-29 cans? If so, how is it? I don't want to order it if it is way off.

Picked up some 1 day old cans yesterday and thought they tasted pretty good. It's been a while since I've had Hop Drop and it has never been my absolute favorite, so I couldn't really say whether it's changed or whatever. Was glad I got a 4-pack though, it's definitely a good beer.

Agreed. Picked up a can last night and it was solid. Nice aroma. I don't think it's 100% where it once was, but it suited me.

When is this topic gonna die? The stuff is still flying off the shelves. I think it's great ipa, proballly better when it won, but theres so many just as good and better here in NC if you don't like it anymore drink something else.

Probably when Hop Drop returns to what it was. Who knows when that will be.

No your wrong IMO of course, but when HDR was right there wasn't an IPA close to it brewed not only in this state but a bunch of others as well. It was that good. Now it sucks I won't spend a penny on any NoDa until it's right, and they know it's not right and hasn't been forever. But still they brew that crap and sell it. Drink Scythe it's the best around right now.

Scythe is good but it's been canned what twice now? 3 times maybe. Not exactly readily available. Plus for many people (myself included), a rye IPA could never be the #1 that they drink all the time.

I don't see Scythe as an everyday beer like you said it's not available everyday. But it is a great IPA that quite easily drinks like a double. Love this beer. I'm in Myrtle Beach this weekend and I have some fresh One Claw, very similar is some respects, but it's a rye pa too. The flavor and mouthfeel of Scythe is exceptional, but that's me too, it just hits it for me. That said fresh Pernicious is damn good too.
