I have seen in searches a hundred and one articles on this site about which glassware to use (nonic pints, tulips, Sam Adams Perfect Pint...), or why to drink from glassware instead of bottles or cans, but very little on why people prefer glasses made of glass as opposed to plastic or metal (or bullhorns, or wood...).

Sure, it's fancier, no BPA or other plastic chemical risk (but is it really a risk?), but it shatters easily, and I have seen plenty of plastic beer tulips and snifters. Likewise, there are also the stainless steel Klean Kanteen-style cups that come in various shapes and are a total breeze to clean, in addition to being break-proof and lightweight.

So my question for you all is: Why glass glasses?

so I can SEE my beer. Thin plastic might be the only thing close but can't say I see many of those around and I am not into making more waste.

I prefer the feel of glass to plastic (both holding and drinking), and I enjoy looking at the beer so metal or other non-transparent materials are at a disadvantage.

In my opinion glass is better than plastic, and you can see through it unlike metal. I have never dropped and broken a glass, but besides doing that I see no downside of using glass...

Personally I like using glass glasses because a glass of any other material is a contradiction, a non sequitur, a logical fallacy, and deeply disturbing to my sense of order.

That said I have no problem drinking beer out of anything convenient, though being able to see beer's beauty in a clear glass vessel, and smell the beauty of beer's aroma captured in a glass tulip or snifter is always a preference.

    1. it allows you to see the beer, color, clarity, etc, something which stainless steel wouldn't allow
    2. i can't speak for other materialsand their adherance, but I know how certain styles and their heads streak the glass, which also gives a hint to the body and substance
    3. certain shapes do allow for the characteristics of the specific brew, two I defintely know are the Kolsch stange and weizen glasses

I don't use the same glass for every brew, but try to find one appropriate to the style. That being said, I collect glassware, and have a few hundred to choose from

I agree with everyone so far and would add that for the same reason I drink my beer from a can in a glass I would prefer a glass tulip over a stainless steel one: metals will give you metallic aroma flavors.

I like glass because there's always the chance that my kids will spill my beer and shatter the glass. It increases my sense of danger and, in turn, my enjoyment of the beer.

But mostly it's because glass is clean, clear, and neat, and is a material that has no chance of adding any additional aroma or flavor to the beer.

Metal / stoneware - Because I can't see through it.

Reusable plastic - Because no matter how well it is washed it still smells like plastic.

I have thick plastic wine "glasses" for camping and any other time I don't want to risk breaking a glass.

I'm 100% in favor of using stoneware or another ceramic IF the drinker is not concerned with seeing their beer.

Beer is beautiful, that's why we use glass 99% of the time.

Yep - I'm with this guy - I like to see the beer... in fact, this is my typical go-to glass - so easy to view the brew from all angles, even underneath: http://www.wineenthusiast.com/riedel-o-pinot-noir-burgundy-stemless-wine-glasses-(set-of-2).asp

It's also light, like plastic, because it's so thin - but I've never had one break on me either. Perfect glass.

Glass is (or should be) completely inert in terms of how it may react with the liquid placed inside it, so it's not likely to alter the flavor. It also holds temperature well enough and is less prone to scratching than many plastics and some metals, giving it better longevity and making it a little easier to clean, not to mention it's probably not going to cloud up with surface scratches so you can actually get a good look at what's inside.

Plus glass is technically an amorphous solid (sort of an incredibly slow-moving liquid), and drinking liquid out of another liquid is cool.

I choose my glassware mainly for the carbonation release the glass is designed to give me. Plastic cups aren't designed to do that. If they make plastic Teku cups somewhere, I'd give it a try!

Smell sight and taste are the three basic aspects of the beer drinking experience. A proper glass ensures the visual aspect as well as the aroma. If you drink from a bottle or can or you pour it into some random receptacle you're just robbing yourself of part of the experience. You're not getting your full money's worth.

I would be more than happy to have one of each style of glass made of gold. Since gold is more or less non-reactive, unbreakable, and would be easy as fuck to clean.

Plastic cups are for children. It's just that simple. That may be an arrogant, snobbish and irrational viewpoint, but that's how I see it. I don't drink out of plastic unless there's no other option and I *really* need a drink.

From a materials science standpoint, glass is completely bad-ass.

Because it's called a beer glass, not a beer plastic
