Do you drink water from a plastic cup? I sure the hell don't, so why do I want to drink my beer out of plastic?

So for all the answers saying that you can't see beer in plastic/metal cups, what about clear plastic "glasses"? I have seen plenty of them in wine/beer stores and the like that are transparent and shaped like tulips, snifters, even the Speilgau IPA glasses. So why not those? Is there any scientific reason why glass is better than clear plastic?

To give you a non-snarky response, it comes down to preference. I don't personally think glass or plastic are all that different, and your points about durability are accurate. However, glass is heavy, feels good in the hand and doesn't have any rough mold seams like plastic.

glassware has more diverse choices of shape.

its also the easiest to completely sanitize.

and yeah, if your reveiwing a beer, the look and coloring are obviously major factors and you are going experience that the best in glassware.

also, a nice unique, sterilized glassware collection looks pretty good in the cabinet or on a shelf.

there is definitely a styling aestetic to it.

A lot of it is personal preference. I will not drink milk out of anything but glass, don't ask me why, I just don't know, it is I guess just one of my "things". That said, I don't like to drink out of bottles or cans, I carry a silipint with me when I go to the beach or am outside by the pool. Inside I always pour it into a glass. I have a glass for each style, but find myself constantly drinking out of a St. Arnolds tulip at the moment "glass of the year". I found that it works best for most styles. It is only hand washed and dried after each use.

So you've never drank water in a plastic bottle? Because that's a plastic cup in any form, just with a screw/pressed-on lid.

Being that enjoying a beer, or any gustatory endeavor is sensory in nature, it makes sense that touch could enter into the experience. For me, the sensation of drinking out of a glass receptacle is more pleasurable than a plastic one.

my experience with any kind of plastic cup/glass thing is they might be say durable and prevent the oopsie I dropped and didn't break, but they get dinged up, scratched and worn, hazed up and look terrible to me.

If I am going to drink something I don't care about in one that's fine, but when I want a nice beer I want a full nice clear glass and a nice one. Even if I might take my chances and break/chip it.

I unfortunately had that problem, my Spiegelau stout glass didn't survive a return trip (crunch on the plane), but I could get another if needed.

    Glass is class

Why would you ever want to use plastic over glass? It smells terrible and you can't clean it.

I dont even know where I would find a metal pint or whatever.

Of course I have. Hasn't everybody? Based on the context of the post asking why glass over other material like plastic if I am at home and have the ability to pour my water into a glass or plastic cup I always choose glass. Thus, if I have the ability or choice to choose glass or plastic for my beer why won't I choose glass over plastic?

Besides the obvious aesthetics, there are a couple main reasons glass is the #1 choice for enjoying most beverages. Primarily, it is inert and impermeable, which means zero reaction, absorbtion, etc. with the beer you want to enjoy in its intended state. It is also much more resistant to scratching than plastic, making it easier to clean and sterilize. If I don't have a glass available for my beer, a ceramic mug is almost always my 2nd choice.

I agree but would add that glass may not be advantageous at college keg parties. Although it has been many moons since I was in college, I have to believe keg parties have not gotten less crazy or hazardous.

That said, I use glass over any other vessel.

Glass is a relative newcomer for beer drinking. The traditional pub vessel was of pink china with a white strap handle up to the end of WW1. Silver or pewter tankards have also been around for a long time, I've several of them and stout/porter are said to taste better from them. But from a practical and aesthetical viewpoint glass is best.
