It doesn't have the highest ratings, but Penn Pilsner is pretty solid

Here's a quote from Bill Moeller (ex-Horlacher, Ortlieb and Schmidt brewer), the creator of Brooklyn Lager:
Of course, brewers like Moeller (and many others) weren't trying to be "historically correct" - only to brew a tasty beer using currently available ingredients and processes and with a recognition of the contemporary market conditions.

I'd take Schell's Firebrick over anything else mentioned in this thread.

And I am of the opinion that Brooklyn Lager is a tasty American Amber Lager.

I am also of the opinion that Sam Adams is a tasty American Amber Lager.

To the best of my knowledge I have been consistent in this thread on this aspect.

    Cheers!

If you can get to Wisconsin, New Glarus Two Women Lager is really good. They don't call it a Vienna Lager, but it is pretty similar in style.

To be honest, the best Vienna ive ever had was Boston Lager. Neshaminy Creek out of PA make one but you wouldnt get distro. Sierra Nevada's vienna was ok but not better than Sam Adams.

The three I came to mention, Metropolitan Dynamo, great lakes Elliott Ness, and Schell Firebrick, have been mentioned multiple times. I did see Bent Paddle Roof Rack listed, man, I hated that beer.

@SeanBond, Gotta go with Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. A bit of a homer pick for me but a really solid interpretation of the style. Jason Oliver is a hell of a brewer, and this beer has won several awards. Cheers.

I'm glad to hear that, because although I won't be drinking it again soon (got it through a beer of the month club), I was really impressed (but couldn't tell if that just meant I needed to drink more of the style).

I was reading an article about the vienna lager and the brewer ( I forget who it was ) said that some viennas could be made with munich instead of vienna and that it would be toastier and heartier. If you have tried saranacs seasons best I think this could be one of the examples of a grain bill that is lighter on the vienna malt. It has that characteristic delicate sweetness but overall drinks much toastier than some others that use more vienna.

These are both good articles .

Negra Modelo, drink it weekly when I go out for Mexican food. Best beer to come out of Mexico IMO

Man, SN Kolsch is so awesome...

Also, OP, I haven't seen you talk about Metro Dynamo? It IS Chicago, after all.

Couldn't agree more. Line up all of the pretenders and wannabes with Firebrick and you'll understand just what a Vienna Lager is supposed to taste like. Metro Dynamo and TJ's (Gordon Biersch) are in the mix too, but Firebrick is delish.

Yeah, I was hoping Metropolitan had one, since they're local, as you said. Will definitely be at the top of my list due to availability.

    Maria, thanks for those links.

IMO Jason Oliver of Devils Backbone Brewing ‘hit the nail on the head’ with:

“My advice for homebrewers would be to pick a gravity between 12 and 12.5 Plato, make it no more than 25 IBUs, do not add a lot of flavor or aroma hops (keep minimal), do not overdo the caramel malts, and have a clean, healthy lager fermentation.”

I would highly recommend that you try Devils Backbone Vienna Lager; the balance of that beer is sublime.

    Cheers!

That's actually the beer in my initial post, that really got me interested in the style. Got it in a beer of the month club, was thinking, "well, this could be alright, let's give it a try." That quickly changed to, "why do I like this so much? Arghhh, and I've only got two bottles..."

    Yup, I hear you!!

I have only had Devils Backbone a handful of times; for a short period of time it was available in my area on draft. It is indeed a high quality Vienna Lager.

    Cheers!
