I haven't seen anything posted yet on this and am definitely looking forward to the release this evening...

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. is celebrating 20 years of making beer in Toledo. To mark the occasion, the craft brewery located at 28 Broadway St. is hosting a party from 6 to 11 p.m. Nov. 14 at its new event center at nearby 201 Morris St.

The highlight of the festivities will be the release of Maumee Bay’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout, which will be available for purchase and limited to four bottles per person. The special brew, which will be available statewide on draft and in bottles, has been aging in a blend of bourbon barrels since January. It is the first of what will become a yearly series.

“Hopefully, it will be an annual party,” said Shannon Mohr, sales and marketing manager for Maumee Bay.

There also will be cask kegs of “fun, one-off variations” of brewery favorites Total Eclipse, Amarillo Brillo Double IPA, and Glass Hopper IPA. Maumee Bay also will have a first-time IPA that was brewed with centennial hops grown at the brewery’s garden. Not to be lost in the fun will be Maumee Bay’s full line of beers, live music, and a cookout.

“We want to celebrate our year-round beers that have helped us sustain our business for 20 years,” Mohr said. “It’s pretty exciting. Even with the other microbreweries in Toledo now, it’s cool that we can still do fun things like this.”

ISO. Now that they're 2 decades in maybe they can afford to date the bottles.

For anyone that has purchased bottles of the BATE and still has some laying around, have you tried recently? Call me crazy, but it's starting to f@*#'ing SOUR! I've never had this happen with their base beer and drain pouring a 12oz $6.99 bottle is enough to drive you nuts.

For a brewery that's been around for 20yrs this is the last thing I'd expect to happen. Thankfully I have plenty of Bell's 30th! :astonished:

I hope not. I picked up 8 bottles at the brewery about a month ago, but haven't had any yet. The one I had on tap was fantastic. I will try one this week and let you know.

The one I cracked this past Friday definitely had that tang to it.

It is taking on sour notes but not all bottles. I've had two in the last week one was a little off, the other was perfect

    Update -

For those that have the issue with their beers, please contact me directly at [email protected] so we can figure out a proper solution.

I tried mine from home last night and while it wasn't as sweet, I didn't get sour from it. It certainly tasted more boozy to me too. (Again, I'm not sure here. I had several bottles at home that I've intentionally let sit on my counter so I could see how they hold up without refrigeration.)

We tried some at the brewery and the thought here is that the sweeetness has dissipated, but not to a turn. However, we're concerned about the cause. Some of this may be from the lactose, temperature is also a concern as all of our's has been kept in a cooler the entire time. We are sending bottles out for testing to find out if there is an actual infection here.

We're working really hard to expand our barrel program and constructive feedback is really helpful. We want to make sure we're not the last to know when anyone has an issue with any of the beers. Please TBA'ers feel free to use my email address or Facebook as a means to let me know if there are issues. I appreciate all the feedback and the help in finding some answers to this issue. I know we've been around for 20 years, but we're still learning in a lot of ways.

    Cheers folks!

    I cracked one tonight.

Unfortunately, this one has noticeable sour notes. It is not awful by any means, but not at all what I had on tap at the brewery. It tastes a little like a red wine barreled beer right now. Kind of reminds me of Weasel Boy's Cabernet Anastasia. It has definitely lost most of that signature Total Eclipse sweetness too. I bought 8 bottles at the brewery on Nov 27 if anyone wants to forward this info to them (I don't have Facebook)

I cracked one last night and had no issues other than some of the flavors were fading. I have 9 bottles left and will be drinking them up sooner than later. Please note that I bought mine at the release and I have kept it out of sunlight at temp between 55 and 60.

We were planning to open a couple bottles tomorrow night for a tasting. Does she want the remainder of the beers given back to her if they do have sour notes?

Best bet would be to email her with the info I provided above.

** I opened another bottle last night and while it wasn't nearly as bad as the one I tried the other night it's definitely not the same. Only difference in the bottles I purchased was half were straight from the brewery, the others were picked up at a local store on 11/27. **

I picked up a bottle for myself and a friend when I was in Maumee right before Christmas. Guess I am going to open mine up sooner rather than later.

Ooo, yeah. This is quite tart.

I don't have anything to compare this bottle too as its my first and only of this beer. But if I drank this with my eyes closed I would never have guessed it was a breakfast stout.

Too bad, I bet it is really awesome normally.

I had 2 fresh the week I purchased them and one last week. The first two were sweet like chocolate milk. The one Saturday was very tart, but I swear I got more coffee on the back end. I have close to a case left. Hoping more are sweet than tart.

Just cracked one last night and it was not the same as the first couple I had, but it was definitely better than the tart one from Saturday. Who knows.
