Zwickel doesn't usually look as much like grapefruit juice.

I have consumed a dozen or so bottles of Furst Wallerstein Zwickel and none of those bottled beers was turbid/murky. They did have a little bit of haze though:

I think it's more like Orange Julius. All joking aside, I imagine that's where the name "Julius" came from for the number one IPA on this site.

@steveh @Lurchus Great info, thanks for sharing. I will definitely try it "mit hefe" next time, although it was still quite cloudy without the yeast poured in. I have heard of Urban Chestnut, but unfortunately they do not get distributed in my area. Would love to try their beers one day. I'll be on the lookout for the St. Georgen.

@JackHorzempa Very nice review. The creaminess of the mouthfeel is what made this beer really enjoyable to me. I am about 35-40 mins north of Princeton. It's been a few years since I have been to Triumph but it sounds like a return visit is in order. Of the others you mentioned, I have only had Victory Braumeister Pils, but what an amazing beer that was! I have seen Southampton Keller Pils in my area and I'm adding it to my ever-growing list of beers to try. Thanks.

Check their website (or call first) before making the trip if your sole interest is trying Aldstadt Lager. They only brew it a few times a year.

    Cheers!

Edit: My recollection is that they prefer to brew this beer during the warmer times of the year (e.g., Spring and Summer).

Will do, thanks for the heads up. Although I see a rauchbier currently listed on their site. Might need to make that trip sooner rather than later!

I have never drank the Triumph Rauchbier but I have always been pleased with all of the Triumph German style beers that I have had the pleasure of drinking. A trip may be worthwhile indeed.

    Cheers!

A bayerishe Zwickel is usually a helles and the north German version is called a Kräusen, which is typically an unfiltered pilsner. I have read much about the unfiltered Pilsner Urquell, I think that @JackHorzempa has access to this somewhat frequently... it's on my beer bucket list.

Douglas, a number of unfiltered PU kegs have made it to Philly over the past few years but unfortunately I have never had a chance to drink this beer. I have either found out about it too late or I had other plans which created a conflict.

So, the 'good news' is that kegs of unfiltered PU make it to the states (Philly) occasionally but the 'bad news' is that these are random events.

One of these days I will luck out and be able to drink this beer.

    Cheers!

    Jack

P.S. Last year a beer bar chain called The World of Beer had a special event where they received 136 kegs of unfiltered PU: http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle...er-urquell-world-of-beer-raleigh-cary-nc.html

They had this at the Chicago HB franchise back in November -- didn't get to try it. Maybe next year.

Speaking of Kellerbiere/Zwicklbiere it seems Weihenstephaner will release a Kellerbier through the monopoly in April. I assume it will be an unfiltered version of either their hell or pilsner, which is fine by me since neither is on shelves here as it is. It will be interesting to see if this is a broad release or if it's been targeted towards a monopoly release.

A Kellerbier from Weihenstephaner sounds awesome to me!

I hope we get this beer in the states!!!

    Cheers!

I always thought a Krausen was a different beer to an unfiltered keller or zwickel? feel free to tell me im totally wrong but I'd always thought a krausen beer had been re pitched with either yeast or some young beer rather than just being unfiltered? Like the difference in Czech pivo between nefiltrovany and krouzkovany?

"I believe..." a Kräusenbier is just as you say, but consumed right after the gyle (green beer) is pitched. Kellerbier is a finished beer (fully fermented -- whether kräusened or not), but unfiltered.

Well, it's not as easy as that. Becher Bräu Kräußenpils for instance, is a finished, but unfiltered beer....

I sometimes think the breweries don't always quite get it right aswell!

Lol, I think they are the ones who get it right and the beer geeks who search for universal, easy to classify categories and answers get it wrong.
Beer brewing in germany, esp. in bavaria and franconia:wink:, has a lot to do with traditions and local practices. So what in one village may be called a "Kellerbier" would confuse costumers a few km further down the road.......
