I brewed an IPA yesterday and was able to finish before the rain began. The mash went great and my OG was spot on after cooling the wort. I poured the wort into my glass carboy and went through the aeration process. I picked the carboy up to go inside to pitch the yeast and let it begin fermentation. As I picked it up, it suddenly slipped out of my hand onto the concrete and the glass shattered releasing all the wort I just worked all day on. I felt like I was in the victory formation going to kneel the ball for the win but I fumbled the snap and the other team ran the ball back for a touchdown and the win.

I am now convinced to start using PET plastic carboys. I always thought i was careful enough to carry the carboy without some type of handle or carrier but I was wrong. Let my disaster be a lesson learned for others.

Sounds like the Bengals yesterday. :slight_frown:

I think a BB or bucket would crack or split open under such stress too. I've yet to drop a fermenter. (Knock on wood). Glad you didn't get hurt.

    Bear hugs, FTW.

Sorry to hear this. Milk crates, or "brew haulers," work great for moving carboys around.

Fortunately no one was hurt. It was just lots of glass and really wet shoes.

I like the idea of milk crates. I have quite a few of those but never thought to use it to transport a carboy.

And thank goodness for that! The broken shards from glass carboys can indeed cause cuts/gashes.

As @inchrisin mentioned if you dropped a BB or a plastic bucket they could indeed fail (e.g., split) but the difference is that they would not create shards which have the potential to do bodily harm.

    Cheers!

Bear hugging a glass carboy has resulted in death.

Condolences on your loss. And glad you weren't hurt! The only time I've broken a carboy was due to my own stupidity. I cool my boil kettle in the tub using a cold water bath and once the water reaches a certain point the kettle becomes buoyant and starts to tip a little. So to stop it from tipping I stupidly put a 3 glass carboy on top of the pot to hold it down. Turned my back for 1 min and all I hear is the sound of glass shattering all in my bathroom. Put on some shoes and cleaned it up but that was my lesson learned.

I usually carry my other glass carboys from the bottom, and very gently, and I have yet to have any problems from that method thus far. (KoW!)

Sorry for your loss. I haven't been there to know exactly how you feel, but I can imagine that it was a real crusher.

Early on, after reading many accounts of emergency room trips and beer- and blood-soaked carpets, I decidef I would get more plastic bucket and better bottles.

Still, I couldn't bring myself to get rid of my 5 gallon glass carboy. What if I dropped it while trying to toss it in a dumpster and had to go to the ER to get glass extracted from my nether-regions? How embarrassing would that be? I'd have to post that "trying to not use glass carboys is equally dangerous." So, I wrapped the carboy in clear plastic packing tape with the idea that if it drops it should help contain the glass. It looks a little ugly, but tape is about as handy as I get. I also carry it in a milk crate.

That is certainly a good precaution to mitigate bodily harm if the carboy breaks.

    Cheers!

Such an embarrassing game. I'm ashamed to be from Cincinnati after Saturday night's shenanigans.

@BixHop another one to look into is the Speidel fermenter - definitely not cheap though, but very good from what I've heard. I've been looking into getting one for some time now, since it also makes racking off it super easy due to the spigot at the bottom. Sorry for your loss though man.

I am sort of in love with this idea. I wear thick gloves anytime I touch a carboy and only carry them with a brew hauler, but I'm still a little paranoid about it. I've been debating switching to plastic for a while, but this might be my alternative.

I can't swear it will help, but I think I should.

I hope to never find out. Certainly couldn't hurt though.

If the tape thing fails and you get injured, you can always sue pweiss909.
