according to victory, dark intrigue will no longer be made because it costs too much to do so. curious if it's trade value will go up because it's not going to be around any more.

I've stashed a bottle away because I heard it was the last time they were brewing it. Don't think I'll trade it though. Just keep it for a special occasion.

Didn't they announce this like 6 months ago? If so, there you have your answer about trade value. Not much...

Either way, if you scale the review scores on a curve, for a Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, Dark Intrigue would be about a C-, at most. It's just not a terribly well loved beer, and they made a ton of it (note the crazy inverse wants-gots ratio), so I can't imagine demand for this beer ever going much beyond a shelf local.

I think it's alright, but a great example of where the base beer is better than the barrel aged version.

Yeah, they said that at the last release it was not going to be made again.

Then again, since they're building a brand new brewery, they're going to have a lot more room at the brewpub for perhaps some experimental stuff. I hope they bring back some more barrel aging. Personally, I'd love to see Old Horizontal in bourbon barrels.

I really didn't care for it fresh, but I did revisit a few months ago and they seem to be drinking much better than I, at the very least, remembered. Still no where near "world class" but an improvement. That said, regular Storm King still is a better beer.

I am sure some will play the retired beer/never going to see it again card to raise the trade value, it is bound to work on some level. There will be someone out there who really wants to try it and will probably trade more than they have to for it.

I think there is a fair number of folks out there who are 1. completely unimpressed 2. moderately unimpressed or 3. slightly impressed but aren't going to spend the time and effort to land this one again. The market is just not there to drive up the value that much.

    You're doing it wrong.

Why bother to both Cellar AND try to Trade a bottle of this if you haven't even tasted it yet? You may love it, and decide you like it fresher, or realize that it's pretty mediocre, and realize you're better off just gifting it to a friend, or forget about it for a decade or two as an experiment?

It's a pretty good to good BA stout. There is a lot of it. I still have 8 bottles or so, but I don't expect it to trade at all. I figure it's a nice bottle to have around when I want to scratch the BA IS itch without cracking into something ridiculous/rare/expensive.

I collect bottles, and I heard this was better When Cellered. I have had dozens of bottles of Abyss and KBS go through my hands and only had 1 or 2 of each...And I Loved those. And I figured I could get more, If I did like it....apparently it's still everywhere. It is where I live anyway.

Lets take a look at DFH raison d'extra. Retired? Check. Average reviews? Check. Still on the shelves and not very desirable on the trade forums five years later? Check.

I mean, to each their own, and it's your beer to do as you wish with it, I just like to try what I can fresh so I can make that determination regarding ageing/trading.

Just dried up in all my local spots in CT this year. I did see a case on a shelf at a liquor store in Frederick MD about a month ago so its definitely still out there.

I thought it was a decent BBL aged stout for the price. As a general rule, though, barrel aging something as hoppy as Storm King will probably produce less than desirable results.

Hopefully Victory won't throw in the towel on barrel aging all together. They just need a different base beer, IMO.

Once you have to start making qualifiers like "for the price" and can still only manage to call it decent I think that is a bit of an indictment on the beer.

IMHO it beats up on BA santas little helper, which is expensive and highly regarded.
