So I was inspired by @bubseymour "5 whales you recently caught" thread and was wondering what 5 whales yuz guyz have had that let you down. I'll be the first to say I find most hyped up beers to be good/very good but not worth the hype. If you don't have 5, post how ever many or little as you want.

    I'll start with

    BVDL
    King Henry
    Cable Car
    Rare
    *many SP beers

I'm not trying to start a debate, everyone has their own preferences and tastes.

Bomb! Was a bit of a letdown. Not that it's a whale, but it was one of the first "this beer is incredible, you must try it" beers that didn't really deliver for me.

That said, I still have a second bottle in my cellar that's waiting to be opened for a special occasion. Maybe I'll reverse my call then.

Same here. I finally tracked down a bottle recently and while I did enjoy it I was expecting more. I would like to revisit it but at $10 a bottle I'm not really eager to do so.
One whale(esque) let down for me was Abraxas. I liked it but couldn't drink have more than a few ounces...way too much cinnamon.

It's such a bummer. The two Prairie beers I've had were both great, but at $9 a bottle around here, I find it difficult to try much of their offerings. Especially giving them a second chance at that price.... I could pick up a 6 pack easy for that price, or nearly get a bomber of something else.

Still, I think it's worth trying. I just read to much hype about it before I poured it in my glass and tried it for myself.

Izzy - while it was good, I couldn't find neither the hype or worthiness of it's cost on the secondary.
    Ann b2 - I enjoyed CD 11 more

I had a chance to try Bomb! on tap yesterday, and wow! The taptender said it was aged 6mo, and it really enhanced the pepper. I like it better than bottled.

This thread needs to come with an abbreviation manual. All these uber-hyped whales that trade in the forum and go by slick abbreviations will be lost on the 90-95% of BAs that don't obsess over the trading forums.

I not sure if these first two beers qualify as whales, but they were definite let downs for me:
    Founders Blushing Monk.
    Epic Big Bad Baptist.
The Abyss , while not really a let down( it was good), did not live up to the expectations I heaped upon this beer after spending an obscene amount of time reading far too many reviews.

Not sure if they constitute whales, but:

    Perrin No Rules
    Bruery Black Tuesday
Lots of American uber-hyped wild ales that are sour to the point of being nearly undrinkable
    Huna
    Abraxxas

The 1st release of BA Abraxas. Decent beer, but far short in quality to what it commanded. Its popularity baffles me to this day. All I can figure is that its rarity caused so many people to give up so much that they couldn't bring themselves to admit that they bought into the hype so badly.

    Black Tuesday- cloyingly sweet
    Dark Lord- Ditto
BVDL- Unfortunately same thing, had it at a tasting and it may have been my least favorite of the bunch
BA Mexican Cake- Enjoyed but just doesn't compare to the BA versions of Hunah or Abraxas for me
Most Sours- enjoy them but my palate can't discern between them to a great extent

I recently had Mother of all Storms because I had not had a barleywine and knew that it would be a good representation of the style. Unfortunately, it was way too sweet. I couldn't finish it and had to pawn it off onto my brother.

Yea man, I love their dry hopped sours but that price tag kills me. I also really dislike the 16.9oz bottle format and breweries that put most of their releases in that bottle format

YES!! I cannot stand when people here use acronyms for almost every beer and brewery they mention. They assume everyone else already knows what they mean, which is really incorrect and annoying.

Abraxas, Hunaphu and BA Hunaphu - I like stouts, but these dont do it for me.
The first 3 times I tried Heady was told they were fresh, but mostly malty. Then, the 4th time I finally got a good one and really enjoyed it. I have quit trying due to the 25% success ratio. Same with Mastermind, the Crusher, and SoS, not really impresssed with any of these, but assume they had fallen off as well.
