Thanks for the info. I did a quick check and neither of them are close to me currently. Maybe once I move out to zone 2 or 3 I'll have better luck.

So I got a voucher and decided to try the Flavourly thing out. Bit disappointed the box doesn't have the contents it said it would have (went for the dark box, ended up with no imperial ipa or stout, or scotch ale, but an abbey beer, 2 milk stouts, a Rye beer and a couple of regular stouts/porters, oh and an odd looking Irish heather sour). Not bad for £14 but I would have been annoyed if it was £24, so I'll be cancelling. I'd still try beer52 though if I had a voucher.

I've had a couple of boxes from Flavourly now - it can be pretty hit and miss. Like you say, for a discounted £14, not bad.

Re: beer52, if you join via this link: https://www.beer52.com/join/46326/01a8c1230c28b56d you should get £10 off your first box.

Great! I was thinking of being a bit of a pikey and trying them all with the discount. The ironically named honest Brew does the first one 50% off, £9 for 6 beers delivered.

Haha, that's exactly what I've been doing with Flavourly and Beer52. Had about 5-6 boxes between them, and not paid full price for 1 yet. They send you money off codes as soon as you cancel your membership so you just sign up again!
I've not tried Honest Brew yet - that seems like an excuse to change that. Cheers!

I had a BrewDog Hinterland which I rather enjoyed. I'd say it was one of the better stouts of theirs I've had. I also had a To Ol Mochaccino Messiah which I really enjoyed.

Which one of the two would you say have the better beers on the whole?

    Saison Dupont
    Orval
    Kernel Export Stout
    Schneider Weisse Tap 5.

Pretty sure this is the best beer night I've ever had at home. Mebbe next year, dry January.

Wasn't going to drink due to having my first ever filling today but sod it, my mouth was no longer numb.
2012 Chimay Blue, very nice if a bit too gushy. Put me in mind of a good, dry sort of sherry.
2014 homebrew Chimay clone, not as nice, think I prefer the dry hopped version.
Hammerton Pentonville Oyster Stout (from Flavourly) - decent, good dry, bitter stout with subtle cocoa and a hint of salinity on the finish. Warming up to this Flavourly thing...

Howling Hops Smoked Porter - what I was happiest to see in my Flavourly box, having heard about their tank bar in Hackney. It's not great to be honest, very prickly carbonation, heavy smoke, dark fruits. Not a patch on a Schlenkerla as far as smoked beers go. Shame.

Manchester Beer Festival at it's new, gigantic, venue. Many beers sampled, standout was Bidassoa Imperial Stout.

I had a bottle of Viven Porter last night, which was a lovely lightly smoked porter from Belgium

I had this last weekend. I wasn't in love with it, but if someone gave it to me, I wouldn't turn it away.

Having my first Anspach & Hobday. I hadn't heard of the brewery before, being new to England. I'm enjoying the porter. Rich in flavour and hardly any carbonation, a treat to drink.

Went to the brewery last weekend and had 6 samples - agreed that the porter, and also the stout porter, are quite excellent, probably their best offerings of the day. Raspberry Basil Wheat was also excellent and quenching and I could see myself drinking a lot of it on a warm summer day - wasn't quite fitting the bill for 0 degree weather.

How did you find the brewery? Is it a nice place to spend time and sample? I am sad to say I haven't been to any breweries since moving here. I may have to ditch the wife since she doesn't seem keen on going with. I think hitting up the Bermondsey mile would be a great place to start.

It's just that relatively thin body and high carbonation combo that masks the flavour somewhat. To me a good beer will have that carbonation like you described for the Anspach and Hobday, where it's understated and velvety smooth. A bit like the difference in carbonation between a nice vintage champagne and a relatively cheap NV.

The guys at the brewery were really friendly. Atmosphere was typical production brewery - bare bones, a few tables, lots of brewing equipment. You can take your drinks outside if you like or bring food in with you. Very calm and casual. I had a blast in Bermondsey in general and while it was by no means slow the fact that it was so cold I think had a limiting effect on the crowds - I've heard it can get mobbed in warmer weather.

Brew by numbers was pretty packed both inside and out, in spite of the cold, by the time we were there a bit later in the afternoon. I loved hanging out at Bottle Shop - tons of great beer on draught and in bottle, lots of space, super casual and very friendly. There are also tons of great food options nearby, in particular the Maltby street market.

That's good to hear. I am looking forward to checking out the area. I was in the area on Friday and didn't realise how close I was. I don't think it'll take too long to get there, next couple of weeks I hope. Thanks!

Been drinking three lagers - Drygate Bearface, I&G and brewpups this is lager. Now onto homebrewed hoppy strong bitter and an oat malt stout lined up after spending most of the afternoon brewing up a hopefully tasty strong hoppy brown ale
