I made a decision to lay off beer for about 30 years or so. Always liked it though and decided to try it again. Alot has changed from when Heineken was the most exotic beer I knew and Gennessee Cream Ale was about the strongest.

I've tried quite a few now, went through an IPA love affair, and have recently settled on mostly Belgians. Belgian Belgians - I find the American belgians to be a little too sweet, except for Ommegang Rare Vos which is nice. Chimay White would be my number 1 choice, but it's too pricey to be an everyday beer, and I prefer to let it be special anyway.

I don't live in a large city so I don't have a huge number of choices, but can anyone recommend any other Belgain- style beers that aren't too sweet? I like New Belgain Trippel but it's a little sweet and also makes it tough to not gain weight.

Hmm Belgians/Belgian Styles are going to be expensive no matter what. Allagash White and Unibroue (brewery in Quebec) Trois Pistoles are safe picks for you I think. Also try North Coast's Brother Thelonious.

Most any Saison, Oud Bruin, Flanders Red, Gueuze, or Belgian IPA would be a start.

30 years without beers must have been a really long time.

If Chimay White is too expensive, I have some really bad news for you about the other Belgians that might be to your liking.

You want a Belgian beer made in Belgium that isn't too sweet, is widely available at the price of an American sixer, low in calories, and an everyday drinker? The best fit is Hoegaarden.

I Like North coast Pranqster. A fruity and spicy brew with a dry finish not too sweet.

if I remember correctly (its been at least 5-6 years since I've had it) La Chouffe was basically a Belgian IPA. You may have trouble finding it though :slight_frown:
Probably not the best option for an "everyday belgian".

if you want an everyday Belgian maybe Hoegaarden? readily available and it's great imo. although it is a bit on the sweet side.

It's too late. There's a time limit on editing that expired long ago.

However, if you report your OP to the mods, requesting a change of spelling in the thread title they can usually help out.

I dunno. I found that a little cloying.
I've found Allagash's beers have a nice balance as far as American made Belgians.
    La Chouffe is great.
    Petrus
    Duvel
    Fin du Monde
    Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp

More expensive: I love RR Damnation.

Edit: I'm a lover of lambics/gueuzes too, and those are, obviously, sour. But they do tend to be $$$$$$

Vuve 5 is nice, and if you can find any I would suggest some of the French blondes or tripels out there that are sometimes a few buck cheaper. It may not be Blegium, but they are so close in proximity that many of the methods are present as well as the taste. Brasserie Moulin D'Ascq I considered a true find.

    Cheers

I don't find the usual Belgian-style beers to be too sweet, especially being a dark and roasty stout lover, but then again that is my palate. Weyerbacher Merry Monks. Allagash tripel/wit as stated above, pretty good examples of balanced Belgians.

Most Belgian Saisons are very dry:

Another 'vote' for the Saison style since those beers are bone dry (i.e., non-sweet).

Some domestic Sasions to try which will be less expensive than the imported (Belgian) versions but still on the pricey side:
    • Goose Island Sophie
    • Boulevard Tank 7 (a hoppy Saison)
    • Ommegang Hennepin
Maybe some other BAs can build on this list.

    Cheers!
