    Thank you for your post!!

There are plenty of other quality malting companies beyond the one(s) that folks would claim is the epitome (or "Cadillac" as you put it).

I am personally just as happy brewing with Best Pilsner Malt as Weyermann Pilsner Malt when brewing German style beers. I think that Weyermann makes a high quality Pilsner Malt but so does Best. When brewing a Belgian Ale I am very, very happy using Castle Pilsner Malt. I have never used Castle Pilsner Malt to brew a German style beer but I have no reason to think that this would not also be a high quality malt for this purpose.

I have brewed with MO but never with the Muntons version. Thank you for that input.

    Cheers to you!!

I'm probably guilty of buying into the Cadillac image of Weyermann...

RE: MO - I've use all of these MO malts, but I've never been in a position to compare, either by having batches close enough in proximity to allow side by side tasting or by just using a few varieties with enough frequency to really have a strong feel for each. One thing I can say is I've never felt disappointed by a brand of MO. Hopefully I'll feel the same about German munich with this upcoming batch or German pils in others.

Weyermann is the top specialty malt producer in Germany, much of their image comes from that.

Edit - they have the main plant in Bamberg, and I found out on the tour we took in November that they make low color base malts nearby in Haßfurt.

FWIW, I don't buy into the Cadillac image of Cadillacs.

Lately I've only been brewing with Weyermann for my German/Czech style beers and a combo of Brewferm and Weyermann for my Ales. I'm gonna brew my first batch this week with the Ireks malt so in about a month I'll let you know. As for tasting the malt I prefer the Ireks over the Brewferm but, time will tell.

Been brewing w/Avangard pils and pale malts for about a year.
No noticeable difference (crush, lautering, efficiency, flavor) over Weyermann other than lower cost and higher levels of mid-boil foamination than typical.

Recently brewed a Simcoe/Santiam IPA and Galaxy SMaSH with Swaen pale malt.
    Crushed finer than other malts.
    No lautering issues.
Tough to beat $1.10/# when Weyermann comes in at almost 25% more.

    ---
Shipping costs can be an important consideration when ordering from o-LHBS.
Large enough savings on the 'off-brand' grains go a long toward covering the shipping costs had Weyermann been ordered from o-LHBS.

Is this the Muntons maris otter 50/50? If so, it's actually half pale malt and half maris otter. I haven't been able to find any Munton's MO that is not a 50/50 blend, so perhaps that explains why you find it to be smoother?

I've never known a retailer to advertise it as blend. Maybe be I haven't been paying attention or there is wool over my eyes?

No, Ive never used the blend before

I believe the blend is somewhat new and in response to poor harvests recently

Bairds is often a blend, usually due to the higher nitrogen content of the MO they get in, they have to cut it. It think it's to do with haze

My LHBS sold me a sack as "maris otter," but it turned out to be a blend. I've seen the same from some online shops too.

Yeah, i think it's just been the past couple of years. Maybe since 2012 or around that time?

Ah, good to know! Somehow I missed that. I have been sold the 50/50 a couple of times (but it was just called "maris otter") and haven't ever seen the other varieties from Munton's. I do like the 50/50, but I prefer a full MO. Thankfully my LHBS switched to Crisp MO which I am fairly sure is not a blend...

I think the introductory prices of Avangard were too good for the HB stores to pass up. I hope prices don't soar in the near future.

Agree, $52 out the door for 55lbs at my lhbs. So far better than any similar priced domestic malts to me, though I'm still waiting on my first batch brewed with the pale ale malt.

Reviving this thread since I'm now sampling an american pale ale brewed with 15 lb Avangard Pale Ale malt along with 2 lb Avangard Vienna and 1.5 lb UK C60 for a 10 gallon batch. First use of this as a base malt for me. The picture is a couple glasses into the keg, this week the beer is crystal clear. I'm very happy with the malt flavor profile for a pale ale, and would use this malt any day over domestic 2 row or pale ale.

How would you specifically describe the "malt flavor profile" and why do you think it is superior to North American malts?

    Cheers!

P.S. The beer sure looks pretty!!

Color and clarity are superb, but setting aside cosmetics this beer has a very full mouthfeel for its relatively low gravity. There is also a very slight breadiness to it that I doubt can be fully attributed to the low Vienna addition. The overall malt profile, however, is still very clean.

No, that sounds logical, it is the Pilsner part I find laughable.
