Do you believe in palate wrecking? Does having a really bitter IPA ruin your palate such that you can no longer taste things as well?

Yes in a nutshell, IMO with a simple IPA balance can be kinda over rated. DIPA's need to be more subtle because of the massive hops, but a simple Surly Furious is stellar and it's stunningly bitter. Finest Kind is also very bitter, but also very good.

Not sure I understand the question, do you mean for a little while, that night, or forever?

    Please explain. Thanks!

Yeah it does if you have something right after it.
Give it an hour though and your palate is back.

I mean within a short while after drinking the bitter beer. By palate wrecking, I mean, you can no longer taste aspects of a beer that isn't super bitter. I don't mean that after a super bitter beer, less bitter beers don't taste bitter.

Yeah I may have voted prematurely. If we are talking for a short period of time definitely yes but if we are even talking days I would change my vote to no.

in that case no, if I cleanse my palate I am ready for more, not that hoppy is my thing.
on avg as really hoppy beer lasts me about 15 minutes all my itself. but I almost never drink hoppy with out spicy Mexican and the hot lasts longer than the hoppy anyway.

Doesnt have to be only IPAs. Any big beer or sour can do a number on your tastebuds.

I assume we're talking about a short session here. A nice lager or Pils won't follow a Hopscikle very well, it also wouldn't follow a RIS very well either. I don't want to drink a beer and for two days my taste buds are off, but we're talking unrealistic suppositions here. I've never had a beer dominate my palate for anything but a very short time period.

I don't think belief has anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure it physiologically exists.

After a Racer X at Bear Republic, a Racer 5 tasted like water.

I'm fairly certain this is a fact. Drink a few Ruinations or GFWC IPA and see if you can taste a Torpedo or a Racer 5 .

    Believe it? I live it.

Had a Troegs Perpetual after a Heady last week. The Troegs tasted like malted grain.

In the short haul like a shock treatment - it jolts you and then subsides - and the long haul as well. Read on.
I believe your taste buds adapt to what they have been subjected to over a period of time. Just like people who live in hot or cold climates adapt to that climate when they have been living in it for a period of time, your palate will adapt to what you subject it to over a period of time. Drink nothing but IPAs & DIPAs for months and your palate will tell you that something that tastes super bitter to a 1st time IPA drinker will be the norm to you and you will not pick up as much bitterness.

I didn't realize this was considered "theory". I had always assumed it to be natural law. But then again, I have heard people say they don't believe in science.

At the risk of being told off, I actually like having a strong IPA and then a stout. I think the contrast helps me appreciate chocolate/coffee/sweetness in stouts more.

I have found that one IPA can ruin my experience of another. Last night I had a Heady Topper and then a Gandhi Bot and I found that all I really tasted in the Gandhi Bot was the malt because the Heady flavors were somewhat more extreme.

Sours are even worse than IPAs - The tartness permeates your cheeks and you wake up the next morning still all puckered out.

I believe you have a "session palate" and an "overall palate".

With your session, I think if you drink or eat things that don't pair well together or proceed in a logical order, they're going to taste funny.

I also think people also develop an overall palate as well... an ever-evolving sliding scale of the things you like (and don't like). I know when I first started drinking craft beer, I'd drink things like Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat (which is arguably not "craft"). Now I wouldn't even cut someone with a broken Leinenkugel bottle.
