Can you preserve 5L mini-kegs?

Alright, I'm a huge fan of Bell's Hopslam, which became available in 5L mini-kegs this year.

I couldn't resists grabbing a couple of these things, but I (foolishly) didn't realize they they're non-pressurized (I only ever buy bottles or cans) and will go stale within 48 hours or so after opening.

There's no way I can finish one of these things over a weekend by myself, and none of my friends are beer lovers (I know, I need new friends). Any way to preserve the life of my mini-kegs after opening? Or am I screwed?

Well, looks like beer training time. You can finish that in 48 hours for sure. Clear your schedule and enjoy!

You're trying to kill me, right? I'm cool with that, but just wanted to confirm.

You can do it pal. Nothing wrong with a weekend of binge drinking by yourself once in a while.

best option is to fill bottles and cap on foam if you have to. or find a way to charge it with co2

carbonation is co2. if you charge the keg with co2 and purge the o2 out it will preserve it.

:astonished: The same way a CO2 tap system works on a keg being tapped at a bar or kegerator.

The cartridge's CO2 pressurizes the head space of the keg as it empties, "pushing" the beer out the tap, and keeping the beer carbonated and preventing oxidation.

Ship that second keg to me for proper disposal
Seriously would love to try it. You need to start Friday after work, and drink thru Sunday (keep it cold). Give the dog some. Also take Monday off:rolling_eyes:

Even like that as a one man team can be hard. I had a crowler of it by myself last friday starting late in the afternoon. And I was pretty much done (i did have a 14% stout earlier in the day, but that is moot:slight_smile: )

I think the low cost solution is to (a) drink what you can, (b) fill up some one liter water or soda bottles and cap them. They should hold pretty good.

And I thought I didn't learn anything in college! Definitely untap it after each use, the Bronco taps have a pressure release valve which will help get you another day or so out of it but unless you're using CO2 the beer won't last very long.

At the very least it sounds like a good excuse to have a party.

Sell or trade them for cans. I don't think it's worth trying to preserve the keg once it's been opened.

But how long will they last when not opened? Most threads say IPAs are best drank under 3 months. Would it be the same for these?

best if consumed within 3 months for sure but if you were crazy I'm sure it will age fine for year or more

You can also spend around $225 for one of those little dispenser things and the CO2 adapter for it if you like way overkill. Best to just drink them when you can knock off 4 beers in two-three days. Doesn't seem too unreasonable. Being 10% will help them last longer before fade, but generally the theme is around 90 days you are starting to change quite a bit. Doesn't mean it is change for the worse, could mellow a bit too if you like a little less punch.
