Won't be like that in Chicago, despite the beer not being very good (thin, like all other recent Abyss iterations, a mess of a beer overall with no consistent flavor profile, etc.) because:

    1. It says something to the effect that its "rare" on the label
    2. Colored wax
    3. "Limited"

I think Abyss is kind of cool after a couple years (when I can start to taste more of the wine presence), but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that doesn't lose it over the beer. Items 1-3 are absolutely spot on, especially 2 and 3.

I still don't understand why they went away from the more simple, thicker, better versions of Abyss pre-2010. Why add so many adjuncts to what was already a pretty good beer?

It is kind of nice to see a bottle explain in detail how it was Brewed. Granted it's not necessary for all those ridiculously small percentages.

Plus I'm sure it helps it sound more 'enticing' and it'll help sell it faster even though it's sitting on Binnys floors everywhere

My god! Could this video have possibly packed any more beer geek stereotypes into it? Let's see, we got:
    1. Beard
    2. Beer gut
    3. A cat
    4. A shitty basement dwelling (no doubt his in his parents' house)
    I'm sure I'm missing some...

You're probably right here about the Rye/Cognac, but interesting to note that regular Abyss seemingly flew off the shelves in 2014 and is still sitting around this year.

My 2c: My 1yr aged bottle of Abyss was much better than plenty of other yearly limited barrel aged stout releases that I had this year. The wine barrel character is fairly unique. The adjuncts are hard to even notice despite the label. I enjoyed it. I didn't buy a 2015 bottle.

Supply has skyrocketed. Last year my store got one case, this year close to 10

In central Illinois last week, I saw 15 cases of regular abyss stacked on the floor at a liquor store. Plus bottles on the shelf with the rest of the deschutes items. Definitely a change versus LY

    Cracked a '15....it's delicious!

When I asked LP Binny's last week, they said it still hadn't come in and they expected it this week. We shouldn't be surprised that we got different stories, I guess.

This came and went in MI - Metro Detroit area. 8 Degrees Plato put it out on Sunday and it sold out in about 30 minutes (I was lucky enough to be heading that direction when the GF saw their FB post - got the last bottle, Cognac), Holiday Market got it on Friday and it sold out that day. I only paid $18 since 8 Degrees is the best.

These are hitting Chicagoland today, just came from Binnys Schaumberg, they will let you buy one, so you have to choose and they are 29.99.....but as a suprise bonus they also have The Dissident, that was a more reasonable 16.99. Not all stores are getting it though, Algonquin got none. Also I had to ask and he went and grabbed them from the back, nice guy, he was the one who asked if I wanted dissident(had no clue it was coming).

Sweet, $29.99! At this rate, everything BA is going to be in the 30s and 40s next year. Time to start a barrel-aged savings fund (which, now that I think about it, will consist of dollars aged in a whiskey barrel, which I then try to exchange at double value for expensive beers like 2017 Abyss: Pass the Courvoisier Edition).

I'm curious as to the reasoning for the up-charge is for the Abyss variants; is it because they've been aged in like 14 different types of barrels?

I feel like Algonquin is getting shut out of a lot of things lately. :slight_frown:
