Brooklyn Insulated Ale is a Schwarzbier that was pretty hoppy. not like IPA hoppy but like a hoppy pils.

Not normally a big fan, but got to try Hill Farmstead James last night which was surprisingly good.

Yup, or any other 'West Coast Stout '- those are some of my favorites. Also included would be Pike XXXXX and Rogue Shakespeare Stout.

The citrusy C hops go best with the roast malts, imo.

Another vote for Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet, Founder's Dark Penance, and Two Roads Route of All Evil.

If you can get to CT, Black Hog makes a really good Black IPA - Black Hog Down.

Had the same predicament the other night. Had a fridge full or death by coconut and hotbox. Usually have a trove of ipas as well, but this time I didnt. I reached in for a Close Encounter. Was relieved when it filled both of my cravings!

Black ales seem to be polarizing at best. I think it is because most people tend to be at one end of the spectrum or the other with expectations/preferences. For example, Victory Storm King to me is a very hoppy stout, but still predominately malt forward, and on the other end, Founders Dark Penance is a roasty IPA, but hop dominated.

I like the ones that feature both aspects equally. The best balanced ones for me have been Stone Enjoy By, The Brew Kettle Black Rajah, Carton Epitome, and Lagunitas Nighttime, and Founders Project Pam (even if you remove the maple)

The recall Deschutes Hop in the Dark being very nice too.

The top ones on my list to try are Revolution Jukebox Hero and Sierra Nevada Blindfold.

Cult Rider from hoof hearted was awesome. Not a black IPA but Fatheads shakedown stout is a hopped up stout and it's also very good.

Maine Beer Co's Beer 3 (as stated by others), Weez
Foundation Prototype (last release) was the most amazing balance of hops and roasty toastiness I had.
