Everyone raves about Tree House, but I honestly wasn't enamored. Had fresh cans of Julius, Haze, Green, Sap and Curiosity Twenty-Three and really only loved the last two. What am I missing?

Jullius and other Tree House brews are amazing, despite the crazy hype train/ trade offers.

When I was out in MA I gave some TH brews to 4-5 friends who had never heard of Treehouse. They all agreed they were some of the best brews they've ever had.

Your not missing anything. Everybody's has their own taste. Lots loved CuddleBug. I hated it. But I'm not into sours. That's a different story. I have tried a bunch of east coast IPAs. I've enjoyed most of them. But I still love my west coast IPA's a lil bit more. Both are different styles of IPAs. More unfiltered coming from the east coast. And more full of citrus flavor.

Haven't been blown away overall either. I do like Sap, lights on, alter ego... but as a whole, I'd rather have trillium IPAs and pales if I'm going that way.

Fort Point can stand its own with Beachwood's FV7. Best pale ales I've had in long while.

Tree house is incredible. I am fortunate to have a bro send me stuff. Don't think i'd trade for it but I don't trade much any more and wouldn't trade for IPAs anyway (too much great stuff here). That said, Tree House is fucking amazing. I would be stoked to have them as my local. We have world class ipas here but you can't say we have anything quite like that.

Drank some Haze and Green from Treehouse at a share, they tasted kind of grassy. People fetishize single hop Citra beers like Zombie Dust and Psuedo Sue in the Midwest. Being in CA we take for granted that good IPA is widely available here, other regions IPA sucks hard and they get really excited about beers that are mediocre compared to West Coast stuff.

Haze and Green are what they are - Julius is the one that is pretty mind blowing even for us IPA-hardened West Coasters. That one is unlike anything I've ever had before.

Eh. This comes across as inflammatory/trolling, if only because it's an easy target for you. I'm not saying Julius is better or worse but it's certainly different than any shelf IPA's we have access to here.

Constellation owns Ballast Point, and the structuring will begin in the middle of the year. Expect lots of sour beers.

I feel like IPAs are a bit of a polarizing style and are even more dependent on personal preference than others. I wasn't a fan of IPAs until I tried Kern Citra and that kind of opened things up for me. I'd say now I'm a fan of certain types of IPAs, but not a general fan. I think the New England style hoppy beers, with their juicy qualities and subdued bitterness, appeal to a lot of the people that aren't fans of your typical IPA characteristics. Wouldn't be surprised if this was a huge market.

I'm not trying to insinuate anything by what I'm about to say, but it's interesting that a brewery like Beachwood that is beloved and well known for making fantastic IPA's locally scores so low in the ratings compared to breweries like Treehouse and Trillium. The locals are driving those ratings here, do we not like them as much as we think we do?

I don't, though Beachwood does have a couple standouts. I also don't really like most of the IPAs that have come out of El Segundo (I'd say the people I've sent them to felt the same) despite their reputation here.

Though again, I'm not a huge IPA fan

It's the difference between them and everyone else being much smaller. If you've been drinking Harpoon IPA for years and suddenly you have Tree House it's a pretty big difference. Here everyone has their favorites but they'll compare any brewery to their favorite IPA from Alpine or Russian River or the million other IPAs they've had and go "Meh, no big deal"
