But it's basically an amped up version of their Hopback Amber. Do you think they should label that beer as an IPA too?

I really doubt that when Troegs named this beer in 2004 (first bottled in 2006), that they were worried about how it would score on Beer Advocate in a particular style category.

Guess that post was poorly worded. I was implying more that it effects how people think about a beer. People expect an amber to be more malty so it's not a let down. I can't recall a many malty balanced IPAs that people get super excited about.

It's kind of like session IPA, which basically is an excuse to call pale ales IPAs.

I agree that most of the currently popular IPAs often have very little (if any) kilned (Victory, Vienna, Munich) or Caramel malt flavor.

I don't personally agree with the masses here on BA, but I agree with your opinion that most BA members think "malt flavor" is somehow a bad thing in any hoppy beer.

It drives me crazy when people say a beer like Nugget Nectar is "all malt now", or "a malt-bomb". I think these people have never truly drank a beer that IS driven by darker (but not roasted) malts, like a brown ale or doppelbock. Because then they'd realize how stupid they sound.

As someone who is always trying something new (ticker), I found myself buying probably a case of NN last year. Loved it. FWIW, I thought of it as the best amber ale I've ever had as opposed to a dipa/ipa. Not looking for bottles though, hopefully we get the pounders as well.

I assume by 'pounders', you are referring to 16oz cans. Not doing those this year, 12 oz cans and bottles, not sure about bombers but haven't seen or heard anyone mention them.

not saying 3 weeks is old for a amber ale but i like to get my hoppy beers as fresh a possible, i would love to try one super fresh!!!! thats all im saying, sorry if im coming off like a snob. if I offered you a one week old NN or a 1 month old NN which one would you take????? if there isnt a huge difference between the two cool, i havent had this beer super fresh to know firsthand because when they hit mass there always a few weeks old. im not bashing NN its no of my favorites

I am a BIG fan of Nugget Nectar. I have already bought a 12-pack of bottles and a case of cans so far this year.

The 'challenge' as I see it is that a vocal part of the BA crowd are EXTREME Hopheads!! If there is anything (e.g., kilned malt, crystal malt, etc.) that 'gets in the way' of them enjoying nothing but hop aroma/flavor they get pissed off. They will vent in any mannner of ways including labeling an 'offending' beer as being a "malt-bomb". That is just the way it appears to be on BA.

My 'answer' is that I just ignore these folks who appear to only be enjoying a beer unless it is akin to chewing on a hop cone.

    More Nugget Nectar for me!!

    Cheers!

P.S. A subset of BA Hopheads are the "crhazies" who seem to only enjoy murky/opaque hoppy beers that are less than one day old and has at least 8 lbs. of hops per barrel of dry hops.

Picked up a 6-pack received at a local bottle shop yesterday and tried one tonight. Overall taste impression? Nope. Just doesn't spin my dial. Oh well. At least I had the opportunity to give it a try. Now, bring on one of those New England (or Stone EB Unfiltered) murky/opaque IPAs.

Picked up a six I'll drink one after work. Bottles and cans seems clunky kill the bottles.

Having my first of this years batch. Meh. I'm as underwhelmed as last year. I don't understand why this is the top rated Amber ale.

Ma >>> Zoe >>> Red Wheelbarrow >>>>>>>>> Nugget Nectar

Picked up two 6-ers locally today, crazy drinkability just as I remember it. At $11/6 I can't say I feel like I'm missing out on not having the pint cans this time around.

Anyone notice a big difference in this years nugget nectar? Last year had an almost orange soda taste. This years batch tasted significantly more malty with a stronger alcohol taste. Anyone else notice this? Is it normal to change that drastically year to year? Maybe I caught a bad six pack?

It did have a big malt taste, but this is my first year trying this beer.

Yes, believe it or not (some call it the dark ages) the Aborigines made beer that featured an actual malt backbone. Fools! Everyone knows beer should not have any degree of perceptible malt presence. It must be dry-hopped 68 times (67 just doesn't quite suffice) and only with the most neutral of yeast strains and very little malt.

    Smartass........

OP, haven't had this year's batch but it's funny to hear folks debate this every year. Palates change..... sometimes alot....perception of what's great changes because of how many world class beers they taste over a 12 moth period.....the beer. I'm sure. Has not changed much if at all.

I buy NN year after year and didn't notice much difference with this year's release so far. I'd say give it another shot: it's one beer that deserves it!
