I'd take Hop Beard as far as that abv range goes, but I do like Shiva.

Wooden Robot's What He's Having is extremely good. It tastes like the beers from Tired Hands and I would argue it's the best IPA in the state other than Hoppy Holidays

Why is "hazy" empirically better? (I'm not being a smartass, I'm actually curious). There's already so much batch to batch variability in most craft IPAs, I don't need lack of filtration to add another variable.

filtration seems like an unnecessary step in the process to me. I'm young and new to beer but I really don't understand why people used to care if a beer was clear. anyway haziness doesn't mean it will be good but in general they tend to be better. might be a coincidence though

It's not just for looks, it's for batch to batch consistency. (A problem that no shortage of craft breweries have, across styles).

It seems to be that because of the NE IPAs we now automatically equate "hazy" with better, and it kind of reminds me of the old days of equating higher IBUs or higher ABV with automatically better.

I had a Pernicious last night after a Nugget Nectar, and the fruity hoppy really shone bright. I happen to like Scythe a bit better, but it's close to a toss up, both are easily the best pair in NC. I Dont really like Freak, and HDR is still a mess.

Filtering (or fining) IPAs removes some of the hop oils. Yeasts attach themselves to some hop oils so when you filter them out, you're effectively removing some of the hoppiness. You can still have excellent, clear IPAs, obviously, but the trend for the extra juicy IPAs is to leave them unfiltered and get all the hoppiness in it you can.

And it probably doesn't hurt to add to the juiciness perspective when the IPA looks like orange juice. After all, we taste with our eyes first.

The juicy/hazy IPAs aren't just unfiltered (there are many beers that are unfiltered), I believe the trub (the layer of yeast/hops that settle out as the beer conditions) is actually re-suspended in the beer via a shot of CO2 prior to packaging.

New Scythe cans are good as a mofo. Dated 2/1.

I'm on way back from business trip. Did those Scythe cans just hit the triangle?

At Bestway. Canned 2/1, probably picked up on 2/2 or so.

IMO, it's because they are. At least the family up in Mass see us more often these daze. But... I'm good with CC Tropicalia as well (albeit filtered).
