Hmmm... I'd be interested in this one, and I think I may go with a single bottle if I see it, as your description of the watermelon not working with the base's hop profile is something I would fear.

Looks really good. I almost purchased that today. Me and my buddy have about $80 of new beers to try for the Panthers game tonight! Its gonna be a great time. I will report on my sampling after the game. Today however, i had a taste for the old stand by, Sam Adams Boston Lager. Its been forever since i have had this. There are so many local brews here in NC that i hate buying anything else! GO PANTHERS!

@cavedave and @utopiajane have you been doing NBS all 11 years? Anyone else? I'm ready for a little history lesson if you've got one to give.

Go for it, for sure. It seems to be getting very mixed reviews, but it's only been out for like a week or so. If you can pick up a single, I'd do so... for science!

I have some of this, and I already had the Pineapple Sculpin version. I am a huge fan of the grapefruit, but it's funny you mention bubblegum cause that is EXACTLY what the pineapple version for me smelled like and it was really distracting.

I also love regular Dorado, so after the Pineapple Sculpin experience, the watermelon has me a little skeptical..

Every beer gets it's chance though! on to the next one!

Good Morning All. Thanks to our benevolent @cavedave for starting us on this path today. Already mid80's here in SoCal. YES, MID-80's !!! God Damn it, I want winter now!!!

As Dave mentioned, "Drink Local" is a cool phrase/approach. I'd like to add "Drink My Local, I'll Drink Your Local."

Pours - Brown reddish color semi clear and cloudy at the same time decent off white head excellent lacing.

Smell - Hoppy smell little earthy I also get some oak and a little citrus.

Taste - The hops stand out more than anything, little bready and bitter as well.

Feel - Medium body slightly dry and bitter.

Overall - A decent beer glad I got a chance to try it not sure I would have it again.

Gosh no! Dave and I are new but it was Matt and Malty that started the thread originally. 11 years ago! That is remarkable. It's been this communities love of the thread and of beer tasting that has kept it going all these years.

Haha no. I started lurking here in 2006 and NBS was already going. @malty started this thread, and we try to keep the flavor that it had back then, but so much has changed since then in the beer world it is hard to believe it is only ten years ago, and NBS has changed as well. @mattcrill filled in often, and then took over from @malty some years back, and two+ years ago he asked me to take over, and @utopiajane and I started to split the duties here at that time.

The idea of this thread was to encourage folks to try new beers, and to review them and share their thoughts about them here, as others did the same. It has always been a "place" where the idea that reviewing the beers you drink gives you more of an awareness of what you like in the beers, and with that a better ability to choose beers you like, and appreciate them more as you drink them. We try to do the same now.

    Hope that helps. Cheers!

    Good afternoon, NBS!

Today I'm trying Dark Truth, an imperial stout from Boulevard. This beer pours a dark, near opaque brown from a 12 oz bottle, with about an inch of mocha head that dissipates quickly. Held up to the light, the beer shows a dark reddish hue.

What's different about this stout right away is that it's brewed with Belgian yeast, and that's the first thing you get on the nose. The taste starts off very much like a big quad - the mellow sweetness of plums and other dark fruit. Quickly, though, more classic (to my mind) stout flavors kick in, and it finishes very bitter, with very darkly roasted malts and hops producing hints of bitter chocolate and burnt coffee. This bitter aftertaste lingers for some time, not entirely pleasantly. My chest feels the warmth of the 9.7 ABV, in a very quad-like way.

This seems a cross between a quad and a big stout. Enjoyed trying it, but not sure if I'll keep it in my regular stout rotation. I do have a second bottle that I'll revisit in a month or so. Would love to hear what others think of this one.

    Cheers!

Happy Super NBS gang! The Primo Kamado is loaded with ribs and smoking away. Time to break the wax seal on a special goodie that a great friend picked up for me a couple of weeks ago. We're going to check out Vlad The Second Order Of The Dragon from Hailstorm Brewing in Tinley Park Illinois. This is the bourbon barrel aged coffee version that weighs in at a hefty 14.1% abv. Let's unleash this beast!

It pours a thin dark brown leaving a quarter inch layer of tan foam on the surface. The aroma is in your face coffee forward with some vanilla and wood. Flavor is pure coffee heaven followed by vanilla, wood, and a touch of bourbon carefully hidden. The feel is on the thin side with a touch of bitterness and acidity.

Overall this is one tasty coffee forward stout. There is a nice complement of vanilla, but I wish it had a thicker feel and a little more bourbon. That aside, I very much enjoyed it and I'm glad I have another. My score was 4.19 / rDev +0.2%.

Have a great Super Bowl Sunday! I'm not sure if I'll be in any condition for another review? Here's the link....

I was seventeen years old during the blizzard of '78. I made a TON of money shoveling driveways like, maybe, twenty bucks! I used the money to buy tickets to see The Tubes at the Orpheum Theater.
