    Taste I got out of the bottle was

    -thin watery on the palate
    -lots of coffee
    -roasted malt
    -caramel
    -sour finish

    What would you guys recommend for something a tad bit more rich chocolatey without the sourness? Something thicker and more filling

    Thanks

    I'd begin with a well-made, straightforward Porter. Both Sierra and/or Anchor should be readily available.

    After that? Read a bit more about styles and figure out what direction(s) you wish to head.

    There is no destination...enjoy the journey!

    I agree that a porter or stout, would do well for you. Well made ones will not be so thin and youll get some chocolate and coffee but its more roasty and robust flavors. Some may come off as a bit dry. As for some readily available, id say check out Guinness Extra Stout, if sierra nevada porter is in your area and the Commodore by Ballast Point.

    I'll throw Founders Porter out there as one of the best Porters around. Now, if you're looking for something drinkable, Guinness in the nitro packaging really isn't bad.

    One other thing, don't let a bad experience with Warsteiner Dunkel stain your opinion. Give it a try on draught if you can find it. Those bottled imports are bad for their brand because they are absolutely punished in ocean containers getting to the US. I have had this dunkel on draught many times and think it is a pretty good example of the style.

    Ahhh---a malt lover!
    I would suggest some Prairie Limo Tint, Founders Porter, Bell's porter, Double Cream, Kalamazoo Stout, Weyerbacher Tiny (AWESOME!), Young's Double chocolate, Ten Fiddy....aw heck, check out my profile, click on style and go from there---that is mine and the little lady's favorite tastes.

    Cheers

    This. Its a great beer on tap and you can definitely find it at Fassler Hall in OKC. Marshall Dunkel is a great example of the style too.

    I've had it on tap and it was fantastic! What would I notice different by going with a porter or stout over a Dunkel or dopplebock?

    Stouts and porters are great, but Warsteiner Dunkel is neither a porter nor a stout, especially not an imperial one. If you want something like Warsteiner Dunkel but better, I would suggest sticking to dark German beers.

    - Köstritzer Schwarzbier is a very popular, very tasty beer right within that style, usually easy enough to find;
    - Spaten Dunkel;
    - Hofbräu Dunkel;
    - Löwenbräu Dunkel was also quite nice if memory serves correctly;

    A step up from that in flavour and mouth feel (and ABV) are German Bock beers like Einbecker Ur-Bock and Ayinger Winterbock. Dopplebocks are especially popular, e.g. Ayinger Celebrator (anything from Ayinger is great), Paulaner Celebrator, etc.

    Something else very similar in style would be dark Czech lagers. The dark Kozel is very nice. Dark (Czech) Budweiser is all right if you can't find Kozel.

    A lot of things, as they are significantly different styles. They're ales, for one thing, so you won't get the clean taste and drinkability that good lagers are famous for. Instead you'll probably get much bigger, bolder flavors, particularly if you drink American stouts and porters, whereas British ones tend to be tamer. Bigger nose goes hand in hand with that.

    They're higher gravity, so you'll also get a much thicker, chewier mouth feel. You'll get less hop notes on average, they'll be much more malt forward.

    Essentially, if you like Warsteiner Dunkel for what it is, i.e. a quaffable, regular-ABV lager with light roasted malt notes, a bit of coffee and that, then you should seek out other Dunkels and Schwarzbiers. If you liked it but it wasn't enough, as in you want more malt and more coffee/more chocolate, oily mouth feel, probably but not necessarily higher ABV and the sort of beer you sip from a snifter, then go for porters and stouts.

    I wouldn't get much coffee out of that personally. Therefore, I would say Ayinger Celebrator for more body. If you want more coffee/ashy/roasted flavor to go with the malts, then go down the porter/stout or schwarzbier road for sure.

    Go to a bar or getränkemarkt in Germany and have it fresh. That should fix it. You're welcome.

    Not an option. It is NOT aviable in germany, export only. And even if it WOULD be aviable in germany, even fresh it would NOT be worth it.

    Dunkles is one of my favorite "styles", and there are many excellent examples from bavaria and esp. franconia, no idea what makes it to the us though:slight_frown:
    And Schwarzbier is something else for me. Although I do kinda like Köstrizer, I could not guzzle down half litle after half litre as I can with really good Dunkles like Vierzenheiligen Nothelfer Trunk,Leupser Dunkel or Manns Spezialbier Dunkel...They are, in general,less roasty, a tad more sweet and way smoother. But there are a lot of variations..

    Maybe not at the Getränkemarkt, but I see it vom Faß at Augustiner Keller, Munich -- best way to have it anyway -- and I have, and it's delicious.

    Warsteiner can't hold a candle to any of the Munich brewery Dunkel.

    Really?? Why would they serve anything else than Augustiner Dunkel at Augustiner Keller? Now I'm confused. The official statement from Warsteiner always was that their Dunkel is "export only". I had it once and know, we are not missing out.:wink:

    I didn't -- and don't -- believe the suggestion to go to the Getränkemarkt by @elliot23 was to get Warsteiner Dunkel, but to find better Dunkel to enjoy -- and understand.

    I took your statement to imply Dunkel of any sort (based on my understanding of Elliot's post) was no longer available in Germany, so I had to double-check, otherwise I won't be visiting ever again. :wink:

    So yes, contrary to your confusion (and mine due to yours :stuck_out_tongue:), the Augustiner Keller serves Augustiner Dunkel, no other, and is still a better bet than Warsteiner Dunkel on any day of the week.

    Clear now? Good. carry on.

    Ok I'm clear. I'd say dunkles is MORE popular than, say 5 years ago..and off course throughout bavaria, you'll find a lot of different Dunkle vom Faß basically everywgere...But I thought "Go to a bar or getränkemarkt in Germany and have it fresh"was,well, referring to Warsteiner Dunkel.
    Glad we made that clear.Yay.
