Yes, this is a marketing thing. Some of these beers were just hoppy versions of amber or red ales, before everyone decided that all hoppy beers should be labeled as IPAs, because IPAs are popular.

I don't know. Never thought of it as red before or thought it looked red. Could be wrong.

I've only had the Runoff Red and I think one other - it seems like a pointless spinoff, but maybe I'm missing it. What are its defining characteristics?

Cool...never used that. Site says flavor contributions are bready and similar to munich malt. Any idea if the diastolic power is about the same a munich?

Troegs calls it an "imperial amber." That seems fairly accurate to me, so that's where I place it too.

From the link I provided in my post: " It is a base malt that may be used for up to 100% of the malt bill..."

    Cheers!

Finback Water on Mars was pretty damn good. A lot of pineapple notes.

The best Red/Amber IPA I've had was the first run of Foundation Prototype, which also used Mosaic.

I'm not sure what the differences are between Evil Cousin and Evil Twin, but Jamil posted a recipe for a Red IPA named Evil Twin here: http://www.mrmalty.com/late_hopping.php

I'm a big fan of the style. My next homebrew is going to be Evil Twin hopped like Foundation Prototype.
