I definitely agree that the "whale" status is thrown around way too much and that KH is not a whale, however neither is Rare. Do they both have potential to be whales 5-10 years down the road? Probably, but who knows. What I do know however is that KH is the best of many BA barleywines, if not beers I have ever had the pleasure of drinking, and that because of that, I would not trade it for 99% of the so called whales out there, and will probably not trade any of my bottles. In fact I'll probably trade some much rarer beers to get more KH. For me quality>>>>>>rarity.

KH is not a wale. People have cases of it. Not a wale. Sorry.

Is there any chance we can rid ourselves of the term "whale" for rare beers?

I suppose we should just agree to disagree in general here. But that's not exactly my stance. My point is more that it doesn't matter how you slice it - collectively Kate has had about half the number of bottles release in its entire 6 year bottling history as King Henry had in one drop. And that's ignoring the fact that the older Kate vintages barely even exist anymore. So, if Kate stays with 2K bottles per year (which could be a one-time thing) it will catch up to King Henry in bottle count 2016. If that somehow makes it equal in your mind, then I don't really know what to say.

Value is different in the eye of the beer-holder.

Consider all the whining about these new insta-wales, maybe we should start calling them wails.

I don't know if you're serious or not but I don't think any list can determine the trade value and status of a beer. I agree it's a good list and I use it once in a while to find out certain information of some obscure beers but I won't base on it in trade. Even Jim agrees that he doesn't know what to do with all the vintage stouts that already go downhill.

a pretty bold statement. what is the worst batch variation you've encountered?

abyss changes from year to year; so does ba blackout, bcbs, angel's share (arguments aside, please), mother of all storms. even firestone parabola and abacus / sucaba were different, and those guys have been barrel-aging for a long time.

i understand you probably have a bit of king henry and you want to think it's valuable. the folly is that you are dismissing that the reasons for its value apply to other beers as well.

yeah, the current problem with ba is that people undervalue new releases.

Still better than any other list and based on some long term analysis of the forums.

Edit: I am generally only half serious so I can always deny/change what I said.

Dude KH is totally undervalued. If it wasn't, people would have started a thread about it's Whale Status by now, I'm pretty sure..

FT: King Henry x2 - ISO: Cantillon Loerik

The 2x KH should make up the $-for-$ and the rarity should match up, right? C'mon, how is this not done yet?!

Don't assume there is a dichotomous standard for whale/non-whale. It is a continuous measure. Is KH a whale? Meh. Maybe for some, but it isn't the same as Dirty Horse.

batch variation not only is generally as pronounced as mild recipe changes, but it usually involves mild recipe changes. chanokokoro, i think you're way off in this argument.

re: "does it matter that so much KH was made?" as always, it matters less if you're trying to trade it away, and more if you're trying to trade for it. if you understand why, you understand why making a serious argument to anyone but a prospective trade partner is foolish.

Haha. I plan to post FT: Beatification b5 ISO: King Henry x2. After you get your Loerik, you should trade again with me or I just post a straight: FT Beatification b5 ISO Loerik.

When is the most appropriate time to post " Beatification b5 Whale Status?" Now? After the March 30th? After April 30th?
