If it was more "syrupy", that goes against everything VC has stated publiclly about brewing a great IIPA.

There is no hop shortage this year (especially for such a small one-off beer) and they don't change the recipe. I suggest the following, in order of decreasing likelihood:

-Your memory is untrustworthy and clouded by the bliss of that long ago experience.
-Your sample was not as fresh this year.
-Agricultural variances in hop variatels from year to year.

I personally loved it and I don't think it's overrated...it was clearly better than PtE which is saying a lot because that is one magnificent beer. I could have drank it all night. I'm sure there are a variety of factors that played into the taste difference...regardless, I will seek it out again next year. I hope everyone who wants some gets it this year without too much of a hassle! (Though for some, I realize that's part of the fun)

I agree with the point you're trying to make (I think), but would add this:

A number of folks on the Pacific forum indicated that they felt this year's version was a bit drier and less tropical than last year's version. A couple of folks indicated that they had heard that VC had, for whatever reason, used a slightly different blend/proportion of hops this year. So assuming that's true, I think it's certainly conceivable that folks might notice some variation in the two versions (this years and last years). That being said...

I had this year's version and last year's version at the brewpub. I thought this year's version might have been a bit drier, with more of a bitter hop punch in the finish. However, I liked both versions just fine, and am quite willing to admit that any differences in flavor I thought I noticed might have been attributable to:

Changes in my palate over the past year
Differing air temperatures in Santa Rosa
My level of alertness at the time I was drinking the beer
What I'd had for lunch or breakfast earlier in the day
An over active imagination on my part
Agricultural variances in hop varietals from year to year (works for grapes, why not hops)
Hardness of the water used to make younger each year

Just my two cents, but this is why I'm always hesitant to say one year is better/different than another year in a beer that is made basically the same way, year in and year out. One thing I do know is this... the beer was excellent this year and excellent last year, and I'm willing to bet will be every bit as excellent/tasty next year. I'm looking forward to finding out...

Want to see this run well in Philly (and I have to say Santa Rosa)...Resurrection Ale. Walked in at 11:25, got 7 ounces of gold. Once it opened to everyone at 12, got another glass.

I don't get this thing where someone says, "It's different than last year" and then someone else says, "No, you're wrong!". How ridiculous. There is huge variability at times in seasonal beers. They are absolutely better some years and not as good others. Who is anyone to judge someone else's palate???

Not all palates are the same and some *are* better than others. Mine's probably middle of the road, but I don't think that's what's going on here.
"Huge" is a bit of a stretch for most seasonal beers. There's a QC problem with brewers or a recipe change if that's going on and several brewers let us know when they make major changes. I'm sure tweaks occur here and there.

I'm not saying that this year's PtY isn't a little different than previous years, but I really question anyone's memory being that accurate for a beer that they haven't had in almost a year, especially their ability to compare the current version to ones from several years back. Most people seem to agree that it's tasting pretty damn good. If that's not the perception of the beer that others may have, who is right? It sounds like you're 100% sure that anyone who says it's different/worse is right.

I think these bullets sum it up nicely:
-Your memory is untrustworthy and clouded by the bliss of that long ago experience.
-Your sample was not as fresh this year.
-Agricultural variances in hop variatels from year to year.
-Changes in my palate over the past year
-Differing air temperatures in Santa Rosa
-My level of alertness at the time I was drinking the beer
-What I'd had for lunch or breakfast earlier in the day
-An over active imagination on my part
-Agricultural variances in hop varietals from year to year (works for grapes, why not hops)
-Hardness of the water used to make younger each year
-You've had many hoppy beers since the last time you had PtY and your preferences have changed

Sure, it may be a little different, but I find it hard to believe it's drastically different. It's not even that it's not worth talking about as it's beer and we're here to talk about beer. Statements like "totally not worth it" aren't perfectly fine for someone's perception of it this year, but they're also not exactly inviting conversation and they're definitive only for the person who made them.

I thought I read about the chance of some PtY at the grand opening of a bottle shop??? I will be in Philly next week for work and have never tried Younger, do I still have a chance? Thanks,

some of these are a stretch (over active imagination?). I think more often than not there can be, on and off these pages, a phenomenon of sycophantic allegiance to certain whale-type beers that I and others might find untrustworthy on a level equal to that of your assumed uneducated palate.

Assuming they're pouring a sixtel of it, I'm afraid so. Even places that don't announce the release typically run through a sixtel in an hour or so, and those that do make a fairly big production of their keg often run dry in a half hour or less.
