I paid 18.65 after tax for my one bottle. And Bent Paddle makes good beer, their cold press black is enough for me to want to see what they can do with a beer like this.

Also - Before the dawn is great, but why buy 4 bottles? Trading? No one wants to make a value judgment on your purchasing decisions, but I'd be happy with 2 bottles of BADSDB and 2 BTD's over 4 BTD's. Also - what makes you think BADSDB is going to be on tap all over the place?

I'd rather spend 10 minutes in my car than 40 minutes in a crowded shitstorm bar pleading to get a 15$ 8oz pour.

Had it not been for last year's ABR, I'd be totally clueless as to why people are chasing after some Bent Paddle BA beer this week.

Per the first page of this thread, this beer hasn't been released before. So you may have had a beer like this (the regular double black or the double shot) but this is the first iteration of barrel aged double shot double black. I could be wrong, it seems like there is a lot of confusion about this.

I was moreso speaking to the people chasing down 4-6 of bottles like this, BA darkness, etc. I'm all for buying a bottle. Stocking up on an unknown beer at $25/each sounds like a recipe for remorse.

I was just saying 4 BTD because that's the limit. Most people buy a full limit and not just one or two.

I think BADSDB is going to be on tap all over because it has already been on tap all over. 6 bars had it in Duluth last week and it poured at two places in St Paul this week. There are another 5 tappings on deck in Duluth per their website, I'd assume some more will make it to the cities.

You're right, there is way too much confusion around this beer. At the very least, BADSDB made an appearance at Red Cow in the fall (so I don't doubt it showed up at ABR as well).

In my opinion, it is well worth the hunt and price (based on when I had it on tap).

I know I'm not helping at all as I don't have the facts in front of me, but I'm about 95% sure this is the exact brew they had at ABR. If I just had my program in front of me...

They also had this beer at Pizza Luce in Richfield late '15.

Well then I'm clueless. Everything I've read said this was their first time putting this beer in barrels. First time using first use barrels and a longer aging process than previous years of double black. I'm no expert, just things I recall reading here and on their instagram page.

From last year winterfest because I had my share "DOUBLE SHOT DOUBLE BLACK Our Bourbon Double Black with double shots of Duluth Coffee Co. Cold-Press and Madagascar Vanilla." the bottle description is more wordy but would say it is the same beer.

    Really???

Anyway, I'm with you. I'm pretty sure I've read that this is a similar beer, but new. There may have been a similar beer in the past, even similar name, but the way I read things, it is a new beer. Then again, I"m not an expert at reading either...

The beer at ABR for 2014 was listed as Double Shot Double Black aged in bourbon barrels for 5 months. 2015 it was listed as Double Shot Double Black but also called it out as barrel aged.

    Per untappd...

Double Shot Double Black Added 9/23/14 575 ratings (ABR?)
BA Double Black Added 12/10/2014 828 ratings (Winterfest 2015?) - This was in bottles too
    BADSDB Added 2/7/16 18 ratings - Todays...

There was a Cold Press Vanilla too, but I dont think anyone is confusing that one here.

    It's really not that confusing...

There's Double Black, Cold Press Vanilla, and Double Shot Double Black in question. A black bottle an orange bottle and a green Aurora Borealis bottle. There is a presumably different BA Black Ale that's been offered on tap a few times.

Maybe this beer was underhyped and unknown due to the confusion

Sounds like this is NOT beer that we are buying up today, since the bottled stuff has more time in barrels and that timing doesn't match up. I'm wondering if they put a first barrels in the Spring of 2014 (maybe April). Then they brewed a second batch (maybe October 2014), getting us to the 15 month aged BADSDB that we are buying now. April 2014 + 15 months gets us to July 2015. Did they hold this beer in a brite tank for another 6 months before bottling? I kinda think not. So maybe the more plausible explanation is that they've brewed 2 (or more batches of this).

April 2014, then 5 months in barrels before kegging and bringing to events such as 2014 ABR and 2015 Winterfest and on tap events.

They decided that the beer was well received and wanted to make more with some tweaks/longer time in barrels/different barrels so:

October 2015, then 15 months in barrels before kegging AND bottling to bring to more events like 2016 Beer Dabbler and current tap events AND the bottles we are buying now

Well, not to add to the confusion, but there is another variant than the three you mentioned - Double Shot Double Black. The one in the green bottle is Barrel Aged Double Shot Double Black (with vanilla). Here's the description of DSDB from the Rare Beer Fest listing last year:

Double Shot Double Black - Instead of conditioning this beer in a whiskey barrel, they decided to jazz it up a different kind of way. Adding a double shot of espresso to an already delicious beer will have beer geeks bouncing off the walls for this beer! LITERALLY!!!

So, I like to think of this beer in the green bottle that's hitting shelves and popping up on tap around the state as a combo of the three beers - BA Double Black, Vanilla Cold Press and Double Shot Double Black - since there seems to be components of all of them. Regardless, it's a fantastic beer and worthy of the hype, in my opinion.

I didn't think the argument was whether or not this was the same batch but whether or not a barrel aged double black had been poured. Definitely a different batch and longer time in barrels though.

Looking back at the 15' ABR program, it was listed as Barrel Aged too. They just called it "Double Shot Double Black":

"Our Barrel Aged Double Black infused with “double shots” of Duluth Coffee Co. “Crazy Juice” cold press coffee and Madagascar Vanilla"

Agreed. This beer has been poured before, but it was a 5 month version. The version out now is a 15 month version, making it a somewhat different and (IMO) better batch.

Either hold over kegs from batch 1 (april 2014/5 months in barrels) OR extended aged batch 1 OR early dumped barrels from batch 2 (approx. 9-10 months in barrels), according to my 2 batch theory.

Not that it matters. I'm just bored at work.
