Paid services. Quite a few BA members have asked for it in the past, as an alternative way to help support the site, but we've been against it. We also said we'd revisit the topic down the road, so here we are. The new system supports paid services via PayPal. Here are just a few things that we could offer initially:
    • New "Member" title to recognize your support
    • "Member" only Beer & Sports Talk forum
    • Increased Inbox size
    • Conversation group lists
    • Conversation prefixes for tagging/sorting messages
    • Access to a Beer Trading feedback system
    • "Member" only ISO:FT forum
(Just some initial ideas, not "the" ideas.)

How much would we charge? No idea. Bottom-line: In order to continue to grow online we need to look at ways to generate revenue without leeching off of the fests and mag, which require separate budgets in order to thrive. So, this is just one option being considered. (Selling more web advertising and revamping the BA Store/apparel line are others.)

Note: The core of BA online would always remain free. This would only apply to some enhanced services, not all new services going forward, and only if we decide to go down this path.

Would you pay? Please vote and discuss.

    Thanks, Todd

This could be added to BA magazine subscribers. Those who pay for the magazine get the upgraded online membership included.

**edit** I meant to add the small fee to the magazine, not just give it away to the subscribers. I understand your trying to raise more money to support the site and would pay a little extra for the added benefits.

This is the way I would go, bump the subscription price and include it with the magazine.

Hmm. Giving this away to mag subscribers wouldn't help the site; especially as you're already getting the mag at a great deal.

We also don't want to bump up the subscription price to include this as it would be forcing it on those who might not want it/use it.

I voted no simply because none of the added features would interest me.
On a side note ,there is another forum that I belonged to that offered this and from my experience it created a huge divide in the membership.
When I new member (non-paying) would ask a question he/she was often met with snarky replies from paying members such as ....
In my opinion it did more harm than good and many people simply walked away from the forum.

Interesting point, and something to definitely take into consideration, but there's also ways to avoid this too.

I've heard the "beer trading feedback system" mentioned before. If this is the route that you guys take to generate some revenue, will this only be available for the paying customers?

Yes, as posted. The idea behind it being that someone who pays for a service will probably be less inclined to abuse it at the risk of losing money.

Side-note: There's an add-on available that can be tweaked for BA. It would allow us to have a beer trader feedback system immediately.

Noope. I'll use what's free as it suits me. None of those features are things I would use much - free or not- I guess I would be curious about the Members Only FT:ISO but don't think I'd fork over the cash for it as the current ISO/FT forum works just dandy for me. The conversation size seems fine as is for my needs and I'll go elsewhere if I want off-topic talk- already a member of many other forums and only come to BA for beer-ish discussion.

Hmm, what about a real-time chat room? I'd toy with the idea of paying $19.99/yr for a LNBA chat room or something of the like. I quite enjoy the IRC #beer chat room from time to time.

Google and Facebook offer paid services (for just businesses, now), as do **** sites.

Pass on the venture capitalists. We enjoy being virtually debt free and not having to answer to suits.

I would be willing to pay for advanced services, but frankly those proposed seem uninteresting to me or not something that ought to be paid only. If you offered the ability to download reviews, maybe view digital copies of past BA Mag issues, or something else more substantial I would definitely consider it.

Quick links on a beer's page to buddy reviews are another feature I'd be happy to see here. But as it stands I vote no.

Definitely agree with the sentiment that I would not like to see the community divided.

YES! And this is why I would pay for those services, and why I also just subscribed to the mag. I Hope more people will support so you guys can continue to do what you want to do, without this entire website being completely overrun by ads, and pop-ups.

    Cheers!

Neither would we, but that assumes this would cause a divide.

Yeah, I guess my concern would be with the "Member-only" forums (though I do love the idea of a beer & sports forum!). Would there still be a non-member trading forum in addition to the member's trading forum?

Yes. If we opted to go the paid services route there would still be a general ISO:FT group.

Ignoring the concerns about what it would do to the culture and such, I would be willing to pay something just to support the site, the extra stuff is just gravy. Especially here where none of it is really critical to using the site, just sort of nice bonuses. Although I think the trader feedback system probably should be global, I could see it working if it's not, but I think it would make sense if it was.

I'm a bit curious how expanded conversations would work, would they need to be started by a paid member, involve ONLY paid members, or just involve a paid member?

I'm going to have to say No right now as those enhancements do not really apply to me. The trader feedback would be the most enticing but are there really that many traders that would make this worth it?

I think it's more of a security blanket than a needed tool. 99% of traders are on the up-and-up IMO.

We've already upgraded Conversations, but groups and prefixes haven't been applied yet. Conversations could still occur between all members regardless.
