Hmm I'd be curious whether their criteria means the city limits or the suburbs as well, although I live in the area, I've not been anywhere else, and Philly does seem to get a good reputation for craft

Having lived in Austin for over a year now, I can tell you one thing... Austin hates being left off of lists!

if Grand Rapids makes it, Asheville should. They battle for best small city beer scene for sure.

They ought to split these lists into a few more regions, instead of lumping them all into one big one.

Top U.S. cities for beers on the West Coast.

Top U.S. cities for beers on the East Coast.

Top U.S. cities for beers in the Midwest.

Etc., etc. That would be more interesting for me to read. Plus, I think it's the craft beer nerd in me that compares the cities I have been to and think are great beer cities, with those I have never been to and can only speculate. I can't really relate to a lot of the cities on the list, because I either haven't been there at all or haven't been there since I was a kid. And in many cases have no access to the beers available in those cities.

Well, just think of F. Scott, Zelda, and Henry William Sydney Porter (O. Henry), to start with. All over Asheville back in the day... O. Henry is from Greensboro, worked in a local drug store, got into lots of legal issues, lived in Austin, Texas and Asheville.... It IS a damned book! My mental life is shrinking by the day! And I love Green Man ESB!

The biggest brewery in Philadelphia's city limits is Yards. Philadelphia Brewing is a bit smaller. There are many quality breweries within an hour or so drive of Philly.

Philadelphia's 'highlights' IMO are the numerous beer bars that feature craft and imported beers. Also lots of special events with Philly Beer Week being a BIG event.

    Cheers!

I'll readily admit local bias but Cleveland definitely deserves to be on that list- I've been to six of the nine and there's as much brewing/drinking passion here as any of the others. Columbus is right on Cleveland's heels and I need to go back to Cincy soon as I've been drinking more and more from there that are distributed to this part of the state. I hopefully will be in Dayton later this month and of the cities on the list I haven't been to Grand Rapids is on my short list of places to take a long weekend. Yeah, Ohio may be flyover country but it shouldn't be. Lots of great beer here.+1 on Asheville being a big omission.

Where to rank Philadelphia on the list is debatable, but it's easily a top-10 beer city.

As far as Cleveland v. Asheville, I'm going to both in July so I can settle that one.

Completely agree. At least I didn't see anything on the list that made my eyes pop, wondering what in the world it was doing on the list. Same with omissions, frankly.

Have been to both Asheville and Bend, and while both are outstanding beer towns (mostly considering what's available, given their size), neither would make my top 9 list.

I would also add, that with a list like this, it's anyone's guess what criteria they're using. At least for me, the two best beer cities I've ever been to are Philly and Portland, yet the two places could not be more unalike. There's no place I've ever been where the craft beer culture seems to permeate the culture of a city, the way it does in PDX. Philly, on the other hand, has the best distribution system I've ever come across, which is part of the reason why the craft beer bar scene is so outstanding. Likewise, some of the events I've attended during Philly beer week, literally defy imagination (some of the Founders, Ballast Point, Hill Farmstead and Funky Buddha I was able to attend were just flat out amazing).

That being said... just like the author who created the AARP list, it's all just my opinion.

    Cheers!

I was shocked to have visited 8 of the 9.

Asheville and Boston seem pretty obvious ommissions.

Been to all on the list. All were enjoyable in their own way.

Not on the list are Bend, Ashevile, even Traverse City MI, that are enjoyable. Indianapolis and Cincinnatti are coming on fast. I need to check out Columbus some day.

Asheville has the Sierra Nevada brewery close by in Mills River, which is a plus in my book.
