Recently, I drank a new Stone Americano Stout (8.7ABV) then after, drank a Founders Breakfast Stout (8.3 ABV) to compare (Breakfast Stout is better imo.. Although the Americano Stout is a good worthy brew). I took one hour to finish each beer (2 hours total) and was feeling the effects a bit.. But I still wanted to drink another beer or 2.. So I switched over to a Hefeweizen (Franziskaner) and it held up very well. It didn't taste weak or watery or unflavorable after drinking 2 pretty big double stouts.. Knowing you should end your night drinking the bigger ABV beers-

Does anyone else have a similar experience to share?..

I'm not sure this is exactly what you're talking about, but I'll add this: There can be an interesting dynamic between beers, or other beverages for that matter. For example, if I have a very roasty coffee stout and follow it up with something lighter and fruity, the light fruits will really jump out, contrasting with the previous flavors from the stout. This is the same with non-alcoholic beverages, like having something fruity after drinking coffee

This is exactly what I'm driving at. And I agree. Hefeweizen's are pretty much my favorite "session beers" (the authentic German ones) and I've been drinking them for a long while. I also run the gambit of enjoying stouts, porters, IPA's and "doubles" of those varieties.. But what struck me the other day, after drinking 2 strong double stouts, then following them up with a Franziskaner Weissbier, is that the Hefe flavors popped even more and equally, it stood up and did not taste weak or watery at all..Like say, maybe a 5% adjunct lager would..

    Peace...

I know where you're getting at... having a fruity Belgian right after any stouts doesn't mix too well. Usually unless I'm drinking similar 'style' I have a coffee or at least water between beers...My palate can be sensitive.

I do this all the time; quite on purpose, actually. I find it keeps the palate fresh. After a certain amount, your palate will acclimate to certain flavors and not detect them too well, so throwing something completely different at them works wonders (after a good amount of water, naturally). So, yeah, going from a BBA stout to a helles (or something along those lines) has me thoroughly enjoying the helles a lot more than you'd expect.
