I don't fully agree with your points really. It's a bad list - period. Why 10 hops? And if limited to 10, why make half of them Australia/ NewZ varieties, leaving off the most common American and European varieties? Why ask a question only assuming it's only being read by "the masses":. This is a beer site. Some people really do know beer and have interesting opinions that haven't formed exclusively around the most popular styles of the day. If we don't care about those opinions I suppose we can assume by craft beer sales that the actual answer, according to "the masses", is Cascade (which is not on this list.)

Why don't you make another thread called "Favorite hops" and put the correct types of hops on that list then.

By the way, I did not make the original poll.

Even with my small blunder of not including cascade or centennial as their own choices I think we can comfortably say that Citra and mosaic are the 2 most desired

I grow Centennials in my back yard because it's a great all around hop for flavor and aroma. I checked "Other" in the vote ... I really dig the onion/garlic character of Summit hops. :grimacing: ( Which most people seem to hate and what Gubna USED to be.:slight_frown: )

I know you didn't create the poll - and please, no offense intended. But you've played a role as apologist for the list, and I'm just engaging in the discussion.

If I were doing the pole, I would just include the top varieties and perhaps some additional varieties that play a unique role in sought-after beers. Perhaps also ask the reason for the choice.

A simple beer lover might choose "Cascade" ..."its the flavor and aroma that got me interested in craft beer"

"Summit" ..."I love the tangerine, citrus qualities"

A brewer might choose "Columbus" ..."because it's a great all-purpose high alpha hop that is economical for a bittering hop but still offers great characteristics for flavor and aroma."

Or "Amarillo" ..."it has a superb ability to brighten the flavor and aroma of more dank varieties such as Citra"

Frankly, I would be all that interested in finding out the results.. Beer fans sometimes fancy themselves as having more knowledge than they actually possess. It might be a better subject for the homebrew group.

Gubna, OMG, yes! That first release (2010 was it?) was atrocious - Like an experimental pilot trial that never should have gone to production. I stayed away from gubna for about three years. Finally tried it again at the original taproom in Lyons in 2013 and it was much improved. Very different beer.

Personally, I really like late additions of Summit, but it has to be used sparingly along with other varieties.

Citra Hops. Not even close. King Julius, Julius, PseudoSue, King Sue, Dinner!, Zombie Dust, Sip of Sunshine, Heady, do I need to go on? Not even to mention Hill Farmstead.

Your reaction backs my point. That strong profile is what set it apart from the rest of the pack and made it so polarizing good. Now? Oskar Blues dialed it back (big time) and turned it into another "me too"/joiner D-IPA. Meh, refuse to buy any more. :slight_frown: I'm totally in the minority and get it.

    Mosaic FTW!

Wow, Citra is going well, a close third to Nelson Sauvin for me... now if only there was an IPA with Mosaic, Citra and Nelson Sauvin - that would be one hell of an IPA!

I went with Nelson to support the options in the poll but Equinox is a close one to tie.

If it doesn't taste like grapefruit juice that's been filtered through used kitty litter then get it the fuck away from me.

Mine's probably Mosaic. I simply love the juicy fruit flavors that it puts out in some of my favorite APA's and IPA's. I also love the fact that I've experienced different fruit flavors in different pale ales that were singely hopped with mosaic hops, whether its tropical, grapefruit, or lemony/lime. So what's yours and what do you love about it.

Gonna get technical here and say hop 'Variety' or 'Subspecies' since they are all Humulus lupulus. But I'll agree with Mosaic no problem, one of my favorites, I don't get the fruity flavors so much as other people though, I get lots of dank earthy flavors and melon, berries if I have it with something Smokey. Incredibly versatile hop.

That's what I started to say(tongue-in-cheek) in the deleted thread. Which brings up the questions that I haven't gotten around to asking : can you brew with Japanese hops or Yunnan hops? Are any of the new varieties hybrids of either of those x H. lupulus? (or vice-versa)
