No, because actually there was a time earlier in my life where I didn't like beer at all. It wasn't until I grew older and tried other styles and brands than the Miller's, Coors and Buds that I actually started liking it. My dad once said to me that "beer is an acquired taste."

I took forever to get into beer because all I ever had was BMC, and I didn't like them at all. Once I knew there was a whole world outside of what was stuffed on grocery stores shelves I was set.

Guy at 3Floyds keep getting PBR. I asked him why he was getting such a mediocre beer with so many great choices there. Turns out his friend was the one buying the beer for him and that's by far the cheapest stuff there.

I'd let them do as they please. I know how much effort it took to turn two of my neighbors onto Craft. The other eight still choose to drink garbage. One conversation/comment isn't going to change anyone

I'll do it when a friend is unsure and I can offer the help. A couple of my friends like craft stuff, but they aren't too knowledgable about offerings at this point. So the other night when I was at the bar, my buddy was going to get some decent beer I've recommended before and he liked and I told him to get Nugget Nectar. He said "nah I haven't liked anything by Troegs" and I was like "get it anyway". He loved it. I would never say something to some rando or try and get a friend who calls my IPA "dark/heavy beer" to try one. Some people just like water lol. I hadn't seen BMC poured in a glass in a while, and last night in a dimly lit room I honestly thought it was water for a second.

Because that's what I said? lolzokaybro

IPAs fall into the "the fresher the better" category. And I pointed that out. Get over it.

Not at all unless they solicit my opinion, I agree with your restraint. The old proverbial, "You can lead a horse to water" statement. It's not our business to critisize on their beer selection and no different from an avid BA fan bitching about the macro drinking crowd.

This. I always "want" to. If someone asks about the bombers and canned craft I have I'll elaborate. But for all we know, that guy buying the miller lite 12 pk owns your favorite local brewery, and just decided to play beerpong tonight. No worries, his side beer is bigfoot 2008

I once convinced a guy to put back his Bud Chelada and get a DFH 120 min.. I saw him a few weeks later and he punched me in the face:grimacing:

I sometimes shift people from BM(Blue Moon, Bowel Movement, depends on how you feel about the beer) to Allagash White.

Imagine what your fate would have been if it was the other way around (you convinced someone to put back their bottle of 120 minute in favor of a bottle of Bud Chelada). You'd be lucky to get away with just a single beating... :-)

If I'm out with a friend who is a BMC drinker and they've got some decent craft options at the bar/restaurant I have offered to buy them a beer of my choosing. If they agree then I don't go nuts and get them something extreme. I want there to be a good chance they will actually enjoy it.

This is what I ususally do. Often leads to a good discussion about beer as well.

I have plenty of friends who post things on the web or tell me about how they picked up a case of whatever simply because they know I like beer. Most the time, those beers are terrible and things I would not drink if it was all you had but I let them be. I talk about what beers I have been drinking so if they want to drink better things, they know where to find me. Random dudes at bars and distros...no, I just laugh at them in my head and carry on.

why does it seem like I like most of your posts?

And OP, I just let people go about their business. All you can do is offer people to try one of your beers. I turned a semi-craft liker into loving FBS. All with generosity at the heart of it.

Most of the time when I shop, I like to initiate conversations. If i start talking too much, ill spend more money than I have and wont be able to eat for a while.

I would never try to dissuade someone's decision in a store or if I didn't know them at all. The can buy their Miller Lite and enjoy it for all I care. I just feel like it's not my business to interrupt them and try to change their mind. In a bar I might offer suggestions to people if we happen to be chatting. I have done this with friends but only if they go to order an overpriced beer that I know they probably wouldn't like.

The problem with offering advice to strangers is that in most situations, it's extremely presumptuous. If there are sufficient contextual clues that a stranger would probably be receptive to unsolicited advice about craft beer, then feel free to proceed at your own risk.

But to echo most of the replies in this thread, in the absence of such contextual clues, the odds that your advice will go unheeded or will give offense are far too high in most situations for it to be a regular practice.

I've been tempted as well but I usually just let them wallow in their own ignorance. If I'm at the beer section at Whole Foods or something and some guy starts up a conversation about the beer choice, then I'll offer opinions.
