Why is "collecting" beer so offensive to many BAs?

There certainly is a degree of jealousy I suppose for those who have hundreds of world class beer. I really don't think however that people are so much upset that some folks get a shit ton of great beer but more so the manner in which they get it: bringing a girlfriend/boyfriend to just get an extra two bottles, scamming stores for more allotments, following trucks from store to store etc.

which is why i personally this whole goose island thing gives me a little schadenfreude for those who muled and such to get buku BCS coffee..the people who are super pissed off are really only pissed off because their "currency" just went down the shitter.

I don't have a problem with trading, either. It increases exposure for small breweries and that's a good thing. I don't like people hoarding a beer at the expense of other local fans that want that beer. If there are extras that don't sell after the initial mad rush...knock yourself out. Buy 100 bottles to trade.

I know Odd Sides in michigan let some guy buy 200 bottles of Hipster Brunch Stout in November. That is what is ridiculous. All I want is two beers when I go out and buy limited bottles. One to cellar and one to drink right away. If I like the beer then I will drink it pretty quickly but it is dumb to buy that many beers.

If most of the beer in the cellar is getting worse, then the wrong beers are being kept in that cellar. If the person cellaring the beers knows what they are doing, then all the beers will get better with age. Though there is room to experiment or take chances with those beers that are hard to determine whether they will improve. I love barleywines, old ales, imperial stouts, quads, and gueuzes, all of which I prefer with age on them. Not that every brewer builds the beer well enough to stand up with age, but my favorites in the style are all aged. A great book to get started with cellaring and understanding what can be aged and what should not be aged is, "Vintage Beer" by Patrick Dawson. It also discusses how the flavor profile will change at different periods of the aging, so that the person cellaring can open it at the proper time for their personal taste preferences.

As long as lambics have best by dates of 20-30 years, I'll be "collecting" them :stuck_out_tongue:

I can only see doing this with high abv stouts and porters. Wish i had the self control to cellar beers.

i tend to accumulate beer but it is for consuming at a later time rather than hoarding. For example, when FW BA beers are released, i ten to buy 3-5 depending on availability. Drink one fresh and try them in a year then next in two and so on. Also comes in handy to trade later down the road

Some people like to cellar, some don't. Unfortunately, a sizeable amount of humans tend to think their way is best and all others are "stupid."

If the brewery did not establish a bottle limit, I lay most of the blame on them.

I used to live in Orange County and had access to pretty much anything I wanted, I now live in a very beer deprived city in Oregon. Being HS at The Bruery I generally buy Bruery beers and pick up 5-8 cases at a time and spread the beer out over the course of 6 months. So I can see why people have large amounts of beer at one time.

What irritates me is when people take advantage and buy 3-4 cases of a limited supply beer. I feel the same way about any product though, just because you can buy all the velveeta mac and cheese doesn't mean you should.

For all the people saying that people should be allowed to buy whatever they want, and at what quantity they want, are full of it. There's a difference between buying what you need/want and being a jerk. I've found that the people that overbuy stuff are the ones that are first to go on BA and post pictures saying "look what I have!".

Good for you, now I have to trade someone in Montana for beer I should be able to get in Oregon, which is exactly what happened.

I get annoyed when people have beers they're most likely never going to drink just sitting there. Someone could have enjoyed that 5 years ago.

I do have a bit of a cellar but nothing really sits for much more than 6 months. It's more about "oh hey nice I still have one more bottle of backwoods bastard" than it is I'm gonna spend $25 on some ris and not touch it for five years.

Side note: I firmly believe you should drink a beer fresh before you cellar it. If for nothing more than a frame of reference.

Not for sure which brewery you are referring to but it seems a bit 'odd' that they would sell that much to one person. Douchebaggery on both sides of that transaction

Sounds like we cellar for similar reasons! I'd also add that I've done enough verticals to know how much age I prefer on a specific beer. For example, I know I like 3 year old Abyss the best and don't touch them until then. It's another layer of beer that is fun.

I think it's confusion over the semantics. A collection implies long term ownership whereas as we all know, with few exceptions, beers will be drunk relatively soon. But in another sense the term collection is correct, as collecting is also the process of obtaining an item or items. Now having said that, I am not offended over people who collect beers. The reason is, you really can't drink everything as fast as you obtain it. Besides, to each their own.

I've got 10-20 beers in my "cellar" right now so I suppose I have a "collection", but this "collection" certainly isn't a permanent fixture.. :sunglasses:

Small brewery that is relatively new, and they have never really had a beer get this kind of attention before. From what I hear, after the cluster-F yesterday they will most likely have strict limits for future releases.

A bit late to the party here but the thing I dislike are those who hoard just for the purpose of trade bait or to build the best cellar ever. I have spoken in other forums of the "truck chasers" here in my area and how they go from store to store sucking up all the limited hard to get stuff then bragging about it on our local forum and being a total douche to others. (I am quite surprised the admin puts up with one in particular). People, including myself have chided him about it but he very impolitely lets us know we are free to engage ourselves in coitus, to put it mildly. So yeah, those kinds of a-holes are what I so dislike about todays beer scene. Fortunately there are still a lot of us old timers around who still don't mind sharing and conversing politely with one another. And as I have said before, there is a ton of new beer out every week, readily available for me to try. Today I purchased two mix 6ers of 12 beers I have never had as well as 6 bombers of 6 other completely different beers I have yet to try. So I am good! Cheers!

For the most part I agree. But this is a newer brewery that is new to the bottle release game. Even though they had announced no limits when asked, I'm sure they were shocked when the first guy at the counter ordered up $1700 of the beer.
