    So I convinced the wife to take a beer road trip to the southeast. We are both off for week ending March 19th so we will be departing Chicago around noon on the 11th. The only thing set in stone is that we need to be in Atlanta on the afternoon of Friday March 18th. We are bringing our small dog and I am open to driving anywhere, but here is my working list, does this sound reasonable?

    Chicago -> Nashville -> Asheville -> Charlotte -> Columbia -> Charleston -> Augusta ->Athens -> Atlanta

    Not staying a night in each place, but I am trying to map out the easiest way to stop at the following breweries: Wicked Weed, Green Man, Fonta Flora, Zebulon, Old Hickory, Westbrook, and Creature Comforts.

    So my questions for you good people:
    What other breweries am I missing that are worthy of a stop? Should any of the above be removed?
    How many days should i allot for Asheville?
    Where is a good place to stay in Asheville to be close to the breweries?
    Are any of these breweries pet friendly?
    Gonna need food recommendations for along the way, nice places and hole in the walls.
    Recommendations for places to hike/ sightseeing other than breweries?
    Best area to stay in Charleston? Any beaches similar to Tybee in the area?
    Bringing golf clubs, any notable courses that won't break the bank?

    Anyway, I have only been to Charleston once and have never been to NC, so I am going into this pretty blind. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    So I will comment on a few of these cities. For Asheville you should dedicate at least 2 full days I think. The food and beer options are limitless. I would add burial to your list for Asheville. As far as I know most if not all of the breweries are dog friendly and or have a lot of outdoor space. There is a hotel in downtown Asheville called downtown inn and suites. It's not the nicest of motels but it's clean and safe. Sierra Nevada brewery is about 25 mins from Asheville and it's a nice place to visit. For Charlotte I would check out Noda and birdsong. There is a great fish taco place called Cabo fish taco. To be honest, columbia sc is not a beer destination but it is smack dab in the middle between Charlotte and charleston. In columbia the best brewery is probably conquest. There are several nice beer bars the best is probably craft and draft. If you do stop in Columbia let me know and we can split some bottles as I live there.

    Charleston is amazing. Other bars to check out there would be COAST and holy city. For food go to edmunds oast and Husk. Both are pretty expensive but have cheaper options. Other places to see there would be closed for business. Good beaches in charleston area include Sullivan's island and isle of palms. Hope this helps

    Thanks a lot. Trying to figure out if its worth going out of my way to stop at Fonta Flora and Olde Hickory. Otherwise i would drive to Charleston via Spartanburg->Columbia.

    Never been to flora so I'll let someone else answer that. If you are going from Charlotte to Columbia to charleston then you wont be in the Spartanburg area. But if you do find yourself in the Spartanburg area then Greenville
    Sc is a nice place to stop.

    If you head down 40 from Asheville heading towards Charlotte, you will pass through Morganton (where FF is located) and through Hickory (where OHB is located). You won't really have to go out of your way at all

    Correct, Charlotte is not necessarily a required route, just looking at options. Actually, i am leaning towards the 26 route and checking out the scenery between asheville and Charleston. As much as my wife loves beer, need to come up with some other activities to do in between me getting drunk. I would like to find some waterfalls, streams, rivers etc to do some easy hiking...assuming the weather cooperates.

    Ok I see now. Asheville will have some hiking. The best hiking is probably a further up the mountains in the Boone area (which is pretty close to hickory)

    It'd be a mistake if you didn't drop in at Fonta Flora. It's 5 minutes off I-40 east of Asheville and before Hickory and one of the best breweries in the Southeast. Whatever route you decide on, ensure Fonta Flora is on the list. It is totally worth it.

    You could take the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Boone (an absolute gorgeous drive with plenty of hiking spots and lookouts along the way), then head down 321 to Hickory and hit OHB, and then you are only 30ish minutes from FF.

    What kind of beers do you like? Is food and/or ambiance important, or is it just purely most sought after BA beers?

    Mostly everything. Lambics, wilds, stouts, IPAs especially. Not a big fan of most English styles, not huge on abbey style Belgians, or anything brownish.

    Does Fonta Flora regularly have any of their wild ales on draft at the bar? They website wasn't working so well so i couldn't really see what they have.

    If its just a stop by a brewery i don't really red too much for ambiance or food, but if we are going to be spending an afternoon or something there i would like to have food and a nicer atmosphere.

    Sounds like a great trip. There was a string from the second half of last year (I'm pretty sure) that contained a lot of great hiking suggestions for around the Asheville area. I'd say Fonta Flora is worth a visit. I really enjoyed the meal I had a few blocks away at Wisteria a couple weekends back. Creature Comforts is amazing (though the GA brewery/tasting laws are just silly; if you're looking to stock up on CC beer, just go to Five Points Botle Shop, which is worth a visit anyway). Cheers!

    It depends. When they release their wild ales in bottles, they have them available on draft. However, when you visit in March, I doubt they'll have any. Who knows, they could release something between now and when you visit. They typically have saisons on draft, and some are tart.

    If you end up taking the I-26 route, I'd stop at Green's at exit 104 (you can see it from the highway). Ridiculous beer selection. Or Total Wine at exit 103, not visible from the highway but less than a half mile off the exit.

    Any thoughts on taking the long route and going through the Tail of the Dragon on the way from Nashville to Asheville? Always wanted to see it and was wondering if it is up to the hype.

    For beer purposes, I'd skip Nashville, Columbia, and Augusta and spend more time in your other cities. I do love the Nashville scene, but think you'll enjoy Asheville as much or more, especially for hiking and scenery.

    Agreed, but the wife loves Nashville so it will be on the list, also it is 6.5 hours from Chicago, so that's about as far as I want to drive in one day.

    I think i just about got the timing figured out, now just to fill in the places to see on the days:

    Friday: Chicago -> Nashville
    Saturday: Nashville
    Sunday: Nashville -> Tail of the Dragon -> Asheville
    Monday: Asheville
    Tuesday: Asheville
    Wednesday: Asheville -> Charleston
    Thursday: Charleston
    Friday: Charleston -> Augusta -> Athens -> Atlanta

    Seems reasonable to me.

    Wicked Weed is pet friendly in the downstairs back patio section.

    Greenville and spartanburg aren't bad if you do end up over here. RJ rockers is open Thursday and Friday afternoons and a quick stop in for a beer would be worth it. Hub city tap house just opened a few months ago a land sling some delicious ciders and have 30 beers on tap so also a good place to go for a bit. Greenville has a lot of smaller up and coming breweries as well as Thomas creek and I guess you could almost put quest up there, but some decent local places to snatch good beers such as barleys and Trappe door. If in Greenville there's a greens and total wine as well as the greenville beer exchange which is a real cool bottle shop. Save travels
