i'm stoked to have them as my local go to brewery. thank god we have this gem, because otherwise the East Side is still behind the game a bit.

Haha yeah, this is why I hesitated earlier about buying that second bottle. When I came back later the limit had been dropped down to 1 bottle.

Could there be more factors? How many people that accidentally got B1 of Vacation with Brett actually returned it for B2? Would Bob or the Hermosillo staff recognize your face? Not saying these things make a difference, but do they matter? Not jumping up on some high horse, just curious what you guys think. I like how beer friends is handled. A growing mystique... Haha

That's derogatory to the East Side. I mean, we got Iron Triangle, playa! Or do the Arts district breweries not really count for east side since it's on the other side of the river.

Say what you will.. or don't say what you will since no one makes any noise for them, but Dry River is making some fairly cheap costing drinkable sours. I think the problem with the East Side growth is that it's being stopped by anti-gentrification folks.

Not to take anything away from Monkish, because they really turned that ship around, but I think their relationship with HPB really did help give them a push in to that direction. Their "beer friends" list happened after HPB's and relatively after Cart Fetish. I'm sure that was probably a topic of discussion in how to run down the list of who buys your product on eventbrite. Then they really went full tilt with spontaneous fermentation after that collab. So I do think that friendship benefits both of them.
I can't wait to try both versions of their parking lot beer when its ready.

Haha, I only ask for the sake of conversation...I actually didn't even max out today. HPB are good people, and I appreciate their loyalty to their loyal customers. I grew up a mile from the brewery 25 years ago...so it's always good to visit the old hood. It's crazy to see how the area has changed.

It's definitely only based on online purchases. I know some big spenders at the Hermosillo along with close friends of Bob who are not beer friends. Which makes me very happy with the way HPB beer friends is handled, no favoritism. edit: no gratuitous favoritism.

i'm the last person to be derogatory to the East Side since i live here and love it here. we are "a bit" behind the Torrance / South Bay area when it comes to breweries though. in number and quality. i think HPB is one of LAs best though, so maybe it balances out? without HPB there would be a big hole on this side of town. Golden Road, Angel City, Iron Triangle and Eagle Rock are all either so so, or complete wasted opportunities (GR doesn't count any more). hopefully Arts District gets better. and it will be awesome when Modern Times opens

i always figured the relative lack of growth over here was because of the difficulty of dealing with LA County, as Eagle Rock has talked about extensively. it's mind blowing to me that there isn't a brewery in every East Side city (Silver Lake, Echo Park etc..). So far I haven't been blown away with the Dry River options I've had but will continue to try

i might take out my life savings and start my own brewery. New Money Brewing

I've been sitting at the bar many a nights overhearing veteranos talking about how they just can't believe the night and day change the place went to.

all the hipster women in mom jeans and the men in poorly matching bright colored shorts and shoes. It disturbs me what they find fashionable. I swear I saw a girl swear a surgery smock as a jacket.

Highland Park is a vibrant area that still has a lot of diversity. But yeah, a lot of the stores kind of remind me of this

I don't THINK there are more factors. And if there are they can't matter that much. Mostly because I doubt Bob or the Hermosillo could pick my face out of a lineup even though I'm a "beer friend" and frequent the Hermosillo regularly. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I can't say. There are several places around town where I would be recognized by name/face, but I don't think that translates to either special treatment from those establishments or super patronage from me, the customer. It's just friendliness between business and customer, the same as it would be in any other industry.

That said, I've consistently used HPB beers as "throw-ins" in trades and shipped cases ahead of trips home to bring to bottle shares on the east coast. I think I've done a lot to get the word out about HPB, and it's resulted in me proxying for more and more people with each successive bottle release. Maybe THAT'S something that gets you noticed a little more? Who knows. I'm just happy to be a part of it.
