This is a noob question but do they usually have a list of variants? Do they have some of the same from the previous year and change out others? Totally different each year?

They are usually announced the morning of DLD.

Yeah they are announced the morning of DLD. A few variants have consistently shown up each year:

    - Vanilla Bean Dark Lord (Brandy in 2011, Bourbon every other year)
    - Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Lord
    - Muerte Dark Lord (Dark Lord aged in either Bourbon or Brandy with chili peppers)

Then a few more after that, there are supposed to be around 10 to choose from this year.

Vanilla has shown up every year (although it was brandy in 11 and bourbon every year since)
Muerte took a year off in 14
Bourbon was 11, 12, 15. (although is 11 is referred to as PVW DL in beer geek circles, even though the bottle just says bourbon dark lord)

Otherwise we've had brandy 3 times (once being labeled as 2 year brandy)
    Earl has been released twice.
Every other variant was a one off.

If you drop the cash and go Dark Lord the beer may bum you out but Dark Lord Day beer tasting won't:wink:

Here's to hoping they do the Cognac Coffee DL again. It was excellent.

Here's a question. What would you guys think of showing up to Dark Lord Day without a ticket?

There were plenty of people camped outside the grounds last year with grills, chairs, tents, and coolers and all seemed to be having a great time.

I ask because I have a friend who lives in Chicago who's interested in getting together that weekend (like we did last year) but doesn't want to drop the $200 for a DLD ticket. Just wondering if anyone has gone without a ticket (obviously during the ticket-era) before.

Well judging from the recent Big Freedia news her updated schedule most likely will include jail. LOL

I suspect a ton of people are going to do this. The $200 fee has divided the hardcore beer consumer from the casual beer drinker that is friends with a hardcore beer consumer and I'd imagine is creating this situation for a ton of people (myself included). Lots of people happy to drop $30 just to hang out, share, and maybe hit a tap or two while their beer nerd friend buys all the DL they can. WAY less people all the way in for the $200 package. I doubt that means tickets are going to be any easier to get but it changes who is interested in it big time.

Good point. It'll be interesting to see what's happening outside the grounds this year. Hopefully it doesn't cause any problems.

I wasn't thinking of anything major for our setup, just a few chairs and a cooler and then just a lot of in/out stuff to grab pours from the guest kegs and of course bottle share with people walking by.

Or could I try to convince him to pony up the $200 and I'll buy his Dark Lord share from him.:sunglasses:

He could most likely find somebody to take his Dark Lord bottles off his hands for at worst cost($130) or even more. Not advocating the sales of bottles to make money, but with the change in price and tickets this will surely occur at a higher rate. Yea it means he has to drop the $200 initially but there will be plenty of people wanting multiple allotments. Especially given that there are 10 different variants.

I'm curious what kind of measures will be taken to ensure those who buy 2 tickets and try to get both allotments without a guest will be prevented from doing so.

Yeah I think I'll put that idea to him, paying for his bottles.

Hopefully 3 Floyds has something in place to prevent people from getting multiple allotments. When I heard about the multiple gold ticketers last year I found that pretty annoying.

Just for the record I'm not intending to do anything shady like trying to sneak my friend in without a ticket or anything like that. Just curious to know if it would be a fun experience without even going into the grounds.

The thing is I think a lot of those people camped outside the grounds had agreements in place. Gotta remember, 3 Floyds is surrounded by businesses. You're not really allowed to drink on their property unless they say you can.

I'd definitely lean on him to buy the ticket.

Why would that matter? If someone wants to drop 400 bones on 2 allotments... more power to em.

Yeah, I can't talk anyone in to coming with me this year. My friends are just not big fans of DL. I'll probably be going by myself this year if I can get a ticket.

I don't believe there is anything in place that would stop someone from going through line two times to get a second allotment.

I misunderstood. The only thing they're going to be able to do is not let someone hand them 2 tickets and walk out with 10 bottles. They're not going to be able to stop mules, or folks who walk through twice (unless they're recognized).
