I'll preface this by saying that I'm pretty hot right now.

I was in Binny's earlier today and saw another customer purchasing Sucaba and Smells Like Bean Spirit (this was not on shelves or at the Customer Service area where they claim to put out all limited releases in the past). I asked if I could buy a bottle as well and was told that I could not because it was all spoken for. I then learned that they hide lots of limited releases in the back and that I wasn't allowed to buy any. After asking how I can get access to limited release beers, I was told that they were only released to "good customers", implying I am not a good customer.

So is this just this particular branch of Binny's, or is this standard across the chain? I'm wondering if I will have better luck at another Binny's location or am I just not allowed to buy limited release beers any more.

I was under the impression Binny's didn't play favorites and allowed anyone to purchase a beer. The worthless customer service guy gave some half-assed excuse about it only going to the best customers who won't resell it. Well, I guess spending ~$50-60 per week on average at this store isn't good enough.

Or, is what he really saying is that I need to kiss the beer guy's ass? I asked him if this was the case and of course he denied it.

Looks like I may have to start shopping exclusively at The Beer Cellar and The Beer Temple.

Which Binny's? I think Plainfield is not guilty of hoarding limited releases for themselves or "special" customers. Maybe they're playing stupid because they usually have no clue when limited beers are coming to their location to begin with.

Downers Grove, so Oak Brook and Glen Ellyn are close and are option.

Irrelevant comparison. I am not a place of business. First come, first served.

If you're spending $50-60 a week at a store and not getting taken care of, you're doing it completely wrong.

Also, who the hell buys Sucaba when Straight Jacket is readily available?

If you're mad, call Corporate. They'll address it with the staff.

It's a thing that happens at pretty much all of them, though. Nothing's really gonna change.

I do wish Binnys would use the membership card they have to help define a "good customer" instead of it being totally subjective for the beer guys. I've been on both sides of it. Get both arguments and it sucks no matter what how it's handled today. Give me something tangible to know where I stand. Aka if you spend over $2000 a year you get access to certain limited beers, if you don't then consider yourself lucky you don't spend $2k a year on beer and move on. It's a business, they have a right to look out for their best customers but let's define it instead of making it some sort of cool guy "in" thing.

Well, I go in on my lunch break and get in and get out. I don't have time to kiss the beer guy's ass, nor do I have the desire to.

100% agree, I can't see how anyone could argue with that.

This is an age-old question that has been asked in various forms about a trillion times on this site - argued each way back and forth and back and forth - and the correct answer is to allow the federal government to solve it much like they solved healthcare with Obamacare.

I wish they had all stock in the shelves (I've also seen stores with a marker board that lists beers behind the counter). I don't like have to ask every time I go in a store if they are hiding something in the back. 99% of the time they seem annoyed and don't have what I am looking for.

I'm not sure how this is different than 99% of stores that sell craft beer. Just because they're a chain shouldn't change the calculus.

I don't seem to have this problem at the Binny's I go to in the city. Whenever I ask for something that I know is in the back or behind a counter, they give it to me. I do wish I didn't have to "know" it was in back or behind the counter, though, especially with how weird distribution of certain beers can be (e.g. I'm surprised they had Sucaba - I thought that all went through Chicagoland a couple weeks back).

I also don't think you should have to "buddy up" to the beer guy or anything like that to warrant "good" customer status. Some people just aren't in to talking and conversation while shopping.

Regardless, I don't see this being a problem that is ever solved - some stores will act like this, and some stores won't.

In my experience most Binny's have some first come first served at the service counter but hold a couple for the well known regulars or possibly a couple for employees.

You have to become buddies with the beer manager and guys behind the counter. The amount you spend there on beer makes no difference since the Binny's card only accumulates points for wine & spirits...

It is because Binny's used to be better than that. I really miss the branch level twitter accounts letting me know something was in and giving me a fair chance to purchase it.
