I don't know if I ever had a real bock. I think the last bock I had was in the early 70's, Meister Brau used to make what they called a bock. I'm not sure but I think it was regular Meister Brau with caramel coloring.

Well just to put my two cents about Bocks on the table- I love them! Rarely do you find a masterpiece of technical brewing skill in the beer world as a triple-decocted dopplebock.

My favorite bocks- Celebrator and St. Martin- Love the malty richness, cleanliness, and overall malt impression you get from these beers. Celebrator also has this awesome chocolate note I've never had in another beer.

There was a Traditional Bock that was part of the Sam Adams Longshot 6 pack a number of years ago that was OUTSTANDING. I have posted numerous times in BA threads: “I wish that Sam Adams would make the Traditional Bock part of their year round portfolio” but it was for naught.

For the interested reader you can read about Alex Drobshoff’s Traditional Bock here: http://www.byo.com/component/resour...nors-boston-brewing-companys-longshot-contest

    Yes!

I was going to comment in this thread today about this Bock. Because it's one of the few (possibly the only) "Traditional Bock" I can remember having. I don't remember much about it, and I believe this was 2009, before I REALLY got into lagers.

I think the Pliny clone was part of this Longshot pack as well. I distinctly remember that double IPA from my first pack I bought fresh was outstanding. And then the second was not nearly as hoppy/more muted. I was so confused, because this was before everyone was ultra obsessive about IPA freshness and bottle dating.

I want to be front row for Was ist Bockbier • Was ist Craftbeer (Kraftbier?).

I figured you'd go for the Weißwurstfrühschoppen! That's my goal anyway.

I remember growing up in the late 60's and early 70's my Dad would get Ballantine and Rheingold Bock (I think, don't anyone jump down my neck) during the spring. For a non-craft beer drinker (these were the dark ages of American beer) back then, he was very beer fashion forward.

Aside from the OP's question, but since the thread has deviated I have one to throw in. Freestate Maibock, very impressive for the style.

Much as I like Weißwurst, I'd be more interested to hear the discussion about Bockbier. Of course, the Bier und Käse & Bier und Schokolade is crazy tempting! :grinning:

Dead Guy has a reply from Rogue in this very thread that it is not.

Of course it is mislabeled. Then you could say it should be Heller Bock. Billie Goats are male, you know.

Not trying to derail the thread, but I'm taking a trip to Denver next year and was wondering if the two German breweries in the area (Prost and Zwei Brewing) make good German interpretations of their respective styles. Can't go by ratings on any beer site obviously, so figured I'd ask people who care about such styles.

Indeed they do. Prost has been a bit hit or miss lately, but when they're "on" the beers are great.
Zwei is wonderful. Never had a bad beer from them.
Worth noting, the original Prost brewers, Bill Eye and Ashleigh Carter have their own place just a few miles away, Bierstadt Lagerhaus. So far their beers have been amazing.
A last recommendation for CO would be Grimm Bros. in Loveland. That's only about 15 mins from Ft. Collins. They do fine work, too.

Nice to know for the next visit.
Prost was spot on when Bill and Ashleigh brewed there.
