Great stuff. UJ will still be in the rotation, but I rarely see UJ around here that is under 2 weeks old. I'm tasting equinox too.

There is equinox in the dry hop, but the main hop in this rev is an experimental that will probably get a name for this fall's harvest. If you had any of the test batch, that one was equinox-focused and didn't have any experimentals in it.

I just read a number of reviews for this beer on BA. There were a number of reviews that made comments of "hop water" and "thin". This particular release will be a 'pass' for me.

Maybe in upcoming iterations they will boost up the malt backbone a bit? Then this would be a beer worth buying (for me).

    Cheers!

It doesn't have much backbone but it is a nice showcase of hops. It seems like losing the malt in hoppy beers is a trend

IMO that is most definitely the case with beers labeled as "Session IPA" (i.e., typically less than 5% ABV IPAs). I have yet to find a beer labeled as "Session IPA" that I enjoy drinking.

Since Luponic Distortion is a more 'robust' beer with 5.9% ABV in theory it should have more malt to provide a sense of balance to the hops. It reads like Firestone Walker brewed this beer purposefully to 'showcase' the hops and I suppose it is a fine line on what level of balance (between malt and hops) that a brewer chooses but to my personal palate an IPA that has qualities of "hop water" and "thin" is not desirable for me. Needless to say but each beer drinker has their own unique individual palate and desires in what they enjoy in a given beer (beer style).

If I read that subsequent batches Luponic Distortion have more balance (i.e., a more substantial malt backbone) I will buy them. If not, there are plenty of other IPAs that are tasty to my palate (e.g., Firestone Walker Union Jack and others).

    Cheers!

Well IMO it has plenty of malt balance, even finishes with a touch of pale-malt sweetness, and you should try it for yourself to see if you agree.

Like this more than I thought I would. It's refreshing. Could see bringing this out on the golf course. Great aroma too.

Sam, I did see it on the shelf of a local beer store yesterday. It was priced at 15 bucks. Even if I was interested in buying this beer previously that price would have stopped me.

If I ever see Luponic Distortion on tap at one of my local beer bars I will request a sample taste and then maybe thereafter order a pint if the tasting goes OK.

    Cheers!

Had a few this weekend. It was good but nothing Earth shattering. I will probably not buy it again but will look for the next one in the series simply because it's from a brewery I enjoy very much.

    It's $8.99 a sixer in California. Don't blame FW.

Beer pricing (what the consumer pays) is sometimes tricky since several parties are involved: Brewery -> Whole Distributor -> Retailer.

When a beer consumer sees the price of beer on their retailer’s shelf they only see the label on the beer and of course they know the retailer. The Wholesale Distributor is ‘hidden from view’.

Maybe the Brewery should have picked a better Wholesale Distributor so that pricing abuses do not occur? After all it is their name on that beer and to pretend they are not part of the overall business/supply chain is a poor business practice.

Also the Brewery’s local sales representative can play a role here. If he/she sees that pricing abuses are occurring some efforts should be made to rectify the situation. The ultimate step would be for the Brewery to request (demand?) that the Wholesale Distributor no longer provide product to the offending retailer.

    Cheers!
