Terrapin Single Origin Coffee Stout Sampler

Paid $11.99 for the 4 pk. I think it's a great deal for essentially 4 different coffee stouts. I personally like the "thin-ness" of the base stout and think it works well here. It acts as more of a delivery device for the coffee than anything else, while giving a consistent background with which to compare the different coffees.

 

I got a 4 pack for $10.99. I'm really into coffee so I was excited to see the differences each one made on the base stout. I've drank 2 and LOVED them so far. Terrapin knows how to make a stout for sure. The base beer is lower abv and isn't overly sweet. Really creamy soft drinking base that lets the coffee shine. I may have to get a few more 4 packs of this.

 

We tried all four the other day. My ranking was Sumatra, Ethiopian, Guatemalan and the Kona. What surprised me the most was how it seemed that the Sumatran gave the base stout a thicker body when compared to the other three. When I rated them Sumatra, Ethiopian and Guatemalan were all pretty close in score with Kona being a noticeable step down.

 

The Ethiopia is a Natural process bean (I'm a coffee roaster), so the fruity notes definitely come through & it was easily the winner for me. IMO, the Kona was disappointing.

 

That's dirt cheap. 40cents over distro cost. You stole it.

 

is this going to be popping up a bit, or is this it and it's gone?

I am outside terrapin distro but going to georgia in a month, would love to be able to find some.

 

It's selling through quickly, but lesser known places may sit on it for a bit. I don't know about a month but Athens in general sits on Terrapin releases for quite a long time.

 

What's the closest to NYC this will come in terms of distro?

 

Call me a curmudgeon but that is a total waste of good coffee...If you know anything about coffee you know that it is best fresh much like hops...Adding coffee to beer=stale coffee in good beer. Fuggetabout it.

 

So you are totally opposed to all coffee beers?

 

That's the exact same ranking order we decided on......were surprised, because we were thinking the Kona would be a favorite. The coffee flavor just seemed weak on the Kona.....maybe too light and smooth to really shine in a stout? Overall, not anywhere near the best coffee beers I have had, but a neat experiment to see the flavor different coffees add to the same beer.

 

I'm with you guys on this, except I swapped the Ethiopian and Sumatra. I set the bar high trying Ethiopian first. The others didn't live up to it, if you ask me. Kona was definitely lacking.

I had gotten some out in Wilkes Barre bout a month ago , and some in Philadelphia this past week, I'm biased towards coffee beer often because it is my favorite non beer beverage but I absolutely loved all 4 of these and I believe went with the KONA as the best one in the four pack.

 

Paid $12 or 13 I think. Excited to try them out and rank 'em!
