Ehhh.. While it would be good, I wonder if someone will spill the recipe, and then you could probably use some dregs from a bottle and work it out pretty easily.

From what I know you only make a starter for the primary fermentation and when it's a non-blend. So if your first pitch is a blend of Sach, Brett, etc, a starter that propagates would change the ratio of yeasts.

But if it's wyeast I'd smack the pack.

So...I did end up buying this kit. Me and a buddy are making 10 gallons...5 for him, 5 for me and it works out GREAT since I have a 10 gallon system. I'm brewing this next weekend...so I cant tell you how this is going to work out....yet

HOWEVER, I can tell you that you can buy all the ingrediants for less than you buy the kit for...go figure! HOWEVER, not by much. It also includes the priming sugar (which i'm not going to need...since i have 2 lbs of corn sugar already for priming) and whirl flock tablets (also don't need). With the yeast/brett and hops and grain and oak a 10 gallon batch in the Brew Builder at Brew Masters Warehouse only comes in about 15 bucks cheaper. Not aweful...you should know you pay a premium for kits...not to mention ones with Russian River plastered all over it!

They base their kit off 70% efficiency, my system does 80-85%...so when I put everything into beersmith i come out a little off. I have NO CLUE what the currants cost...and yes, the oak chips might be kind of a novelty (I didn't get any...they forgot and are sending them too me right now) but still...the mark up on the kit isn't that bad

I bought the crushed kit...because I knew I was going to brew it right away. There is an uncrushed version which, when stored properly, would probably last just fine.

I'm hesitant to post the grain bill...I don't need more beer running and yelling...but its not very difficult at all. 4 malts, 2 types of sugars and an IBU of only around 17 and SRM around 30 (i calculate lower, i'm assuming the currants add some color too). However, Russian Rivers website says its a Redish Brown...and the SRM i get with the kit is RIGHT in the ball park of Redish Brown...not 30

I'll make sure that as I get through the brew process I keep you posted!

Give us the recipe, any good online store would provide it upfront.

I got it also. Brewed last week (11 days ago now) racked into secondary last night.
My mash temp wasn't as high as they recommended - no matter what I did I couldn;t get it higher than 154 or so.
They were talking about racking at 1.020 or so, mine was going so nuts that I couldn't get close to getting a reading till Sunday. So I racked at 1.010 or thereabouts (RDWHAHB) Racked it only the currants, and pitched the bugs. Gonna keep my eyes on it for the next couple weeks then more or less forget about it until New Years or so.

the malts were mostly pale, some acidulated, special B and carafa, plus 2 lbs corn sugar and one(ish) of dark beligian candi syrup. Don't remembe the numbers offhand for the malts, but from this, it'll be easy to replicate again later on. The only thing would be the RR barrel chunks, but I gather there won't by much from that. Standard wood soaked in wine will work.
