Me and the fam will be spending a week up in Portland again (SE mostly), and driving out to Hood River at the end of this month. Any advice on what breweries or events I should check out this time?

Been to: HUB, Base Camp, Cascade, Bridgeport, Deschutes (public house), Laurelwood, The Commons, Hair of the Dog, Lucky Labrador, and of course a few Mcmenamins.

Plan on :PDX: Baerlic(?), Breakside(?) Gigantic. Hood River: pFriem, Logsdon, Full Sail, Double Mountain

Looking forward to visiting my favorite place in the world again. Cheers!

(should mention: March 28 to April 3)

Upright, Ex Novo, Great Notion, Fat Heads

You're missing the Farmhouse Festival at Saraveza by a day. Bummer.

Baerlic and Breakside are both worth a stop. Unless you're looking for food I'd suggest the Breakside production facility in Milwaukie rather than the pub because they have a much larger draft selection. I'd also second all the spots @distantmantra suggested.

As for Hood River, I'd skip Full Sail and spend the extra time hitting Solera in Parkdale. It's ~20 minutes south of HR, but on a clear day the view is worth it:

It is. Everything is brewed on site and there are a bunch of Fat Heads PDX exclusives. No bottles available. Beer is good, food disgusting.

Gigantic is good if the weather is nice (outdoor patio), but the inside is quite small and not all that great for kids.

pFriem kicks ass and is across the street from a park (if you have young-ish kids). My Hood River routine is get salads and apps at pFriem, let kids run around in the park and then drive 2min over to Double Mountain and get a pizza(soooo good!) and more beer. Logdson is right near Dbl Mtn too so you can do a tasting or pick up some bottles there.

    Skip Full sail.

Upright and Great Notion I would rec as well.

Haven't been out there in a while, but in the past, Walking Man was always worth a visit (on your way out to Hood River). Just be sure to check their hours if you decide to stop by, as they're not the most "user friendly."

Just a quick last comment about Fatheads. Their IPA's are quite good, but I've yet to try anything else at the PDX location that has impressed me. As for the food, "disgusting" is a bit harsh. However, if you've been to the Ohio or Pittsburgh Fatheads, then expect a similar culinary experience (fairly basic Midwest pub grub with an emphasis on hearty portions).

Disgusting was probably an exaggeration on my part. Ordered some appetizers before getting on the Bolt Bus last year after Farmhouse Fest and was absolutely floored at the massively large portions.

I would personally pass on walking man, they changed ownership recently and I felt there has been a drop in quality as a result. It may be worth trying thunder island brewing though. Still on the way to Hood River (on the OR side) and producing some tasty things.

The wife and I stopped at Thunder Island on the way home after a long weekend in Hood River last year. We were most pleasantly surprised.

I've found Walking Man to be a letdown ever since Jacob Leonard left.

I second the Double Mountain pizza recommendation. Quite excellent

Gigantic is beyond bad for kids - not allowed inside the brewery (no food). They can hang out on the patio if the weather's nice, but that is iffy this time of year.

I would check the same issue for Breakside - I don't remember if Milwaukie can allow minors, but I know the Dekum location is kid friendly.
