My solution in that case is to get the big pliers out of the drawer where the bottle opener is and give the wax a twist. Then you can get a grip with the opener. And spit bits of crap while you savor your overpriced brew.

Down the Road Brewing has these for their Imperial Stout and BA Barleywine. Great idea. Aesthetics and presentation without the hassle.

Best solution is to use a lighter to melt the wax enough to expose part of the cap, warm the rest with a touch of the fire and then open with a regular bottle opener. Just make sure you are sober when doing this.

Yeah the 2016 did have a pull tab, but the cover was not wax, very easy to open.

Those bourbon companies have dedicated employees to waxing the bottles. Tiny breweries with 10 employees do not.

Has anyone ever seen the pull tab on the waxed top melted and blended into the lower part of the waxed neck?

I for one like the plain wax. When I'm hacking at it with a knife, trying to get it open, I feel like a hunter skinning his prey before consumption...

Guys....there is not one waxed bottle on the market that is hard to open with a sharp knife.

    1. Score all the way around
    2. Slide the knife up at an angle into the cap to cut out a wedge.
    3. Open with any opener.

I'm pretty sure wax makes just about any beer awesome.

I like to light the wax on fire as a sacrifice before consumption. HAHA.

Wax is a Gimmick thats all. Only wax bottles I would seek out are Bombs for the Vinatges.

Last two i Had with wax were a Pain to get off. New glarus and 512 - Funky Kingston

I agree, I had one the other day and it was a total mess. The wax was hard as iron and I had to chip it away. i was so mad when I opened the bottle I sort of lost enjoyment with it since I had to clean up my entire table from a mess. LOL

Down the Road is also doing it with a Saison and I was so impressed with the wax and the tab (and the label) that I almost bought a bottle, until I checked the BA rating and it was below 4 - so I passed. I guess that means it's not just the aesthetics for me!

Not for nothing, but you put a lot more faith in the BA ratings than I do.
