Agreed. Aslin and Ocelot are within 15 minutes of each other. It's like Duke vs. UNC - arguably two of the best breweries in NoVA though they are incredibly different in what they focus on.

Ocelot is also a much better experience in my opinion. That's a place you can go and hang out for a while.

Was able to make it to Right Proper this evening after dropping bags at hotel. Cool vibe, enjoyed a cheese plate and the meatball sub. Had the Raised by Wolves and Humulus Lycanthropus, was hoping for more of the hop goodness in description of beer but a caramel malt very noticeable in both. Good, but was hoping for little better. Enjoyed the Bird of Passage wild ale. Still hope to drop by Aslin before trip is over, pick up couple crawlers for home.

Right Proper has no idea how to work with hops. Every hoppy offering I've had by them is overly malty and with a strange harsh mustiness to the bitterness. Their yeast driven beer and berlinners are where they shine.

I wouldn't say they don't know how to work with hops--Astral Weeks, Songlines, and all of their berliners/goses have great hop character. That said, i do agree that their takes on traditionally hoppy styles don't stand out as much as their 'farmhouse' beers. Some batches of Range Life have been good, and there was a stretch right before the Brookland facility opened up where Raised by Wolves was really light and juicy. It's been a mess since they started brewing larger batches, though. Way too heavy on the caramel malts.

I was in Dominion and randomly ran into a guy who works the taps at Aslin. He said crowler fills for Stellar Parallax will probably shut down by 7pm Saturday/ release day. Yep only 32oz crowler fills for that. But you will still be able to get draft pours afterwards until it kicks. Orange Starfish was released last Friday and kicked in less than 24 hours (growler fills allowed only on Friday).

yeah Right Proper is good at saison and sours, but not IPAs. If you go to Aslin, Ocelot isn't that far from them and they specialize in IPAs as well. Definitely wait until Saturday's release to hit Aslin. Hopefully Stellar Parallax is another hazy juice bomb in the style of Tree House.

Time for the beer traders to get in there with a few mules to get as many crowlers as possible.

There was always some batch variation at the Shaw location and I definitely recall the early batches there being darker and more malt-forward, but at its best, it was light and hoppy and completely unlike the current version from the Brookland facility. I think they'll dial it in eventually, their new system is huge compared to the brewpub.

So what is the verdict on stellar parallax?

I'm a fan. Definitely maltier than Ontario and Neutrino (the only others I've had). Still very juicy and good dry hopped nose. Carbonation seemed fine. The crowler machine is up and running at $14 / 32oz. More IPAs released next week they say.

I thought it was good, not great. They still have a lot of potential, but I haven't loved anything yet. The carbonation problem was greatly improved from Neutrino.

    Seems very pricey

It's a little pricey, but it's in line with growler prices for other premium beers with in the area. If they continue to sell out in a day or two then they can justify it.

Was in today and got crowlers of stellar parallax and the biscotti stout. The biscotti stout exceeded expectations. Definitely on the sweet/ milk stout side, but very good. Aslin is not only making juice bomb ipas, but high quality big stouts.

But what if Aslin was trying to set a new IPA trend with a new style of IPA? I don't want to divulge any more info I was privy to, but coming soon.

I'm not releasing the info before they do and i don't know if it is gonna work out. Sounds interesting though. Sounds like they want more than to just jump on the juicy ipa bandwagon.
