I just picked myself up a handful. Double-checked the neck before purchasing. They're in the fridge now!

Not 100% Bamberg. Interesting beer. Saison blended with Rauchbier. Smokiness is more noticeable in aroma than taste but subtle in both regards. Unique (being polite) combination of the Schlenkerla and the fruity/yeast profile of the saison. Probably an offspring that should not have occurred. Have few more bottles if anyone interested in taste.

Other than the traditional Rauchbier style, the other style that has worked well smoked was imperial stout.

Specifically Pretty Things Fumapappa. It was an excellent beer.

I can imagine even liking it in a stout, despite not really liking smoked beers. A light, effervescent, estery saison on the other hand...

Why shouldn't a smoked Saison work? Smoked Hefeweizen works amazingly well.......so why not?

Maybe I just can't imagine this. A hefeweizen can be creamy, a saison should be "spritzig"... maybe therein lies the problem for me. Like a pilsner on nitro - just wrong IMO.

"smoky" works with a lot of different other tastes... ever had a lichtenhainer?? I love the style, and it combines the tartness and sourness of a Berliner Weisse with a subtle smokiness. For me, everything smoky is well worth at least a try. Or two.

You can't just add smoke to any style, this isn't bourbon barrels and hops you know...

Well, it was half-sarcastic. I'm not saying beers like that don't exist, or even that they necessarily can't work. See the beers below for an example of a bourbon barrel-aged Doppelbock. And there's PLENTY of hoppy/imperial pilsners out there as I'm sure you're aware of.

Unless you were specifically mentioning German breweries making one of these beers.

barrel aged Eiche sounds....very,very good, if a bit "doubled", since to me the oak already gave the beer a kinda barrel-like taste, like drinking a liquid oak barrel:wink:

As for barrel aged Doppelbocks: Those were kinda the first things brewers in germany made and marketed as "craft" besides IPAs, and they used to be hideously expensive (and sometimes still are). To me, it's more of a gimmick than anything...

Faust has a whiskey barrel aged Eisbock that is absolutely tremendous - yes, expensive but no gimmick.

I always thought -gasp, blasphemy- Faust is kinda.... overrated. Sure, their beers are not bad at all, but seen in the context of what else is going on in bavaria, their standard lineup always seemed generic to me. Though I have not tried their fancier stuff.
I can imagine that barrel aged Eisbock works really well. But with gimmicky I'm mostly referring to stuff like Pyraser Herzblut Old Woodford Ultra...

I agree with you on Pyraser, actually, but as far as Faust is concerned, I particularly liked their Pils. Their Hefeweizen, and Dunkel are also pretty top notch, some of their other "regular" line-up I'm not so sure. I haven't had much of their specialty beers outside of the Eisbock and their Auswanderer DIPA which sadly was too old by the time I got my hands on it.

Yikes, that's more than I remember - has it gone up recently? I would have guessed it was closer to €15 or so.

I agree on the Pils and the Schwarzviertler (dunkel), both great beers. The dunkel has a small amount of Rauchmalz that gives it a different twist on a dunkel. Miltenberg is a great little town. We've been there twice.
